State health officials on Sunday reported 2,882 new coronavirus cases and 19 new deaths.

The updated numbers from the state Department of Health and Human Services bring Nevada’s total cases since the beginning of the pandemic to 186,833. The state has recorded 2,539 deaths.

Nevada’s positivity rate, calculated over a two-week period, is 21.5 percent, marking the fourth day in a row the positivity rate has decreased.

Clark County reported 2,178 new cases on Sunday, bringing the total in the county this year to 141,231.

Five new deaths reported on Sunday brought the total number of fatalities in the county to 1,999.

Saturday marked the end of a grim week for Nevada. Officials reported 219 deaths last week — the most recorded deaths in a single week.

Just two weeks into December, it has already become the second-deadliest month for reported coronavirus deaths. There have been nearly 400 recorded deaths this month. August, which has seen the most recorded coronavirus deaths, had 475 fatalities, state data shows.

Throughout the last three weeks, Nevada officials have reported about 53,000 new confirmed cases and 865 additional deaths, which amounts to about 2,500 cases and 41 deaths per day. About 3 out of every 10 cases and deaths reported in Nevada since March have been in the last three weeks.

The state’s hospitals have also experienced surges during the “statewide pause.” Nevada has more patients hospitalized per capita than any other state. As of Saturday, there were 1,854 patients confirmed or suspected to have COVID-19 in Nevada hospitals — a 54 percent increase from Nov. 22. The number of COVID-19 patients in intensive care units in Nevada has risen from 278 to 394 over the same time.
