Late 3-pointer rescues Arizona State

Martin on target for No. 23 Sun Devils in win at Grand Canyon

PHOENIX — Remy Martin hit a 3-pointer with nine seconds left and totaled 31 points, lifting No. 23 Arizona State past Grand Canyon 71-70 on Sunday.

The Antelopes (4-1) rallied from an eight-point deficit to go up 70-68 in the final minute on consecutiv­e 3-pointers by Jovan Blacksher Jr. and Alessandro Lever.

The Sun Devils (4-2) called timeout after Lever’s 3 and worked the ball around to Martin in the corner. He made the shot, and Blacksher’s final attempt rimmed out.

Blacksher scored 21 points and Lever 18 for Grand Canyon, which shot 54.8 percent in the second half in the teams’ first meeting since 1980. The schools are just 13 miles apart but had not met since the Antelopes became a Division I program in 2013.

Arizona State struggled Thursday without leading rebounder Marcus Bagley (left calf) in a 12-point loss to No. 24 San Diego State. Bagley still was out, but the Sun Devils made up for it with blistering second-half shooting and a more aggressive Martin.

Luka Garza had 23 points and eight rebounds in 20 minutes for the Hawkeyes (6-0). The Huskies (0-5) yielded a 25-2 first-half run.

■ No. 4 Michigan State 109, Oakland 91: At East Lansing, Mich., Gabe Brown scored 20 points for the Spartans (6-0), who had a 13-0 second-half run. Rashad Williams scored 23 of is 36 points in the first half for the Golden Grizzlies (0-7).

■ No. 11 West Virginia 87, No. 19 Richmond 71: At Morgantown, W.VA., Miles Mcbride scored 20 points for the Mountainee­rs (5-1),

who made 10 straight shots in an 18-1 first-half run. The Spiders (4-1) trailed 63-33 in the second half.

■ No. 22 Ohio State 67, Cleveland State 61: At Columbus, Ohio, Duane Washington Jr. scored 17 points for the Buckeyes (5-0), who led 31-24 at halftime. The Vikings (0-3) got within one point with 11:39 left.

MOUNTAIN WEST Cal Poly 75, San Jose State 71:

At San Luis Obispo, Calif., reserve Alimamy Koroma scored 19 points for the Mustangs (2-2), who trailed 36-34 at halftime. Richard Washington scored 24 points for the Spartans (1-2), who shot 35.5 percent.

■ Drake 81, Air Force 53: At Des Moines, Iowa, D.J. Wilkins hit seven 3-pointers and totaled 23 points for the Bulldogs (6-0), who shot 56.4 percent, held the Falcons (2-2) to 34.7 percent and had a 40-20 edge in rebounds.

New Mexico 72, Rice 61: At Houston, Makuach Maluach scored 23 points for the Lobos (1-0), who led 31-25 at halftime. Quincy Olivari had 21 points for the Owls (4-1), who shot 33.9 percent and were

outrebound­ed 49-30.

■ Boise State 70, Weber State 59: At Boise, Idaho, Derrick Alston Jr. scored 23 points for the Broncos (4-1), who went on an 11-0 run after the Wildcats (2-1) had pulled within 40-39.

WOMEN No. 1 Stanford 83, California 38:

At Berkeley, Calif., Tara Vanderveer matched Pat Summitt for the most coaching wins in major women’s college basketball with 1,098 as the Cardinal (4-0, 2-0 Pac12) notched 22 steals and held the Golden Bears (0-5, 0-2) to 23.3-percent shooting.

No. 4 North Carolina State 75, Boston College 69:

At Boston, Elissa Cunane had 23 points and 15 rebounds for the Wolfpack (6-0, 1-1 Atlantic Coast), who overcame a 16-point fourth-quarter deficit. Makayla Dickens scored 20 points for the Eagles (4-2, 0-2).

No. 8 Oregon 79, No. 15 Oregon State 59:

At Corvallis, Ore., Te-hina Papao scored 22 points and Taylor Mikesell 21 for the Ducks (5-0, 3-0 Pac-12) in their 24th straight win.

The Beavers (3-2, 1-2) didn’t get closer than 18 points in the second half.

■ No. 9 Kentucky 88, Samford 54: At Lexington, Ky., Chasity Patterson had 16 points for the Wildcats (6-0), who scored 32 points off 21 turnovers by the Bulldogs (1-5).

■ No. 10 Texas A&M 77, Abilene Christian 59: At College Station, Texas, Aaliyah Wilson scored 12 of her 15 points in the first half for the Aggies (6-0), who had runs of 10-0 and 14-0 before intermissi­on. The Wildcats (5-1) shot 22.6 percent.
