Eight finalists announced for Rooney award

Baltimore defensive end Calais Campbell is a three-time finalist with New England wide receiver Matthew Slater a finalist for a second straight year and third overall for the Art Rooney Sportsmans­hip Award announced by the NFL on Tuesday.

The award created in 2014 is given each year to an NFL player best demonstrat­ing on-field sportsmans­hip with fair play, respecting the game and opponents and integrity in competitio­n.

Finalists include four players from each conference and were picked by a panel of former players from the NFL Legends Community featuring Warrick Dunn, Curtis Martin, Karl Mecklenber­g and Leonard Wheeler.

Indianapol­is defensive end Justin Houston and Pittsburgh defensive tackle Cameron Heyward are the other finalists from the AFC.

The NFC finalists are Carolina quarterbac­k Teddy Bridgewate­r, Tampa

Bay linebacker Lavonte David, Philadelph­ia center Jason Kelce and San Francisco fullback Kyle Juszczyk.

■ Bills: Wide receiver John Brown was designated to return from injured reserve.

■ Buccaneers: Running back Ronald Jones underent a surgical procedure Tuesday to have a pin inserted into his left pinkie finger, according to reports. Also, kicker Ryan Succop, punter Bradley Pinion and long snapper Zach Triner were placed on the reserve/covid-19 list.

■ Chargers: Safety Derwin James was placed on the reserve/covid-19 list. James was previously on injured reserve.

■ Eagles: Right tackle Jack Driscoll will miss the rest of the season with a significan­t MCL sprain, Nfl.com reported.

■ Jets: Kicker Sergio Castillo was released Tuesday after he missed three of four field-goal attempts at Seattle. The Jets also claimed kicker Chase Mclaughlin off waivers from Jacksonvil­le on Monday.

■ Lions: Former linebacker Chris Spielman is joining the front office as a special assistant. The Lions announced Tuesday that Spielman will report to president and CEO Rod Wood and participat­e in interviews for the team’s general manager and coaching vacancies. The Lions also announced that Hall of Fame running back Barry Sanders, former Michigan State athletic director Mark Hollis and former Arizona Cardinals GM Rod Graves will serve as advisers for the searches

■ Panthers: Coach Matt Rhule does not expect running back Christian Mccaffrey (thigh) to play in Saturday’s game at Green Bay.

■ Ravens: Quarterbac­k Trace McSorley was placed on injured reserve after suffering a minor knee sprain against Cleveland. Wide receiver Dez Bryant and defensive back Terrell Bonds were activated off the reserve/ COVID-19 list.

■ Steelers: Pittsburgh signed offensive lineman Danny Isidora off Kansas City’s practice squad. Isidora, a fifthround pick by Minnesota in 2017, has made six NFL starts for three teams. Left guard Matt Feiler was placed on injured reserve on with a pectoral injury.

■ Vikings: Minnesota brought in kicker Chandler Catanzaro for a tryout after Dan Bailey missed four field goals on Sunday.

■ 49ers: San Francisco waived safety Johnathan Cyprien.
