Stanford’s Vanderveer passes Summitt with 1,099th win

STOCKTON, Calif. — Tara Vanderveer became the winningest women’s college basketball coach Tuesday night, passing the late Pat Summitt with her 1,099th victory as No. 1 Stanford romped to a 10461 victory over Pacific.

COLLEGE BASKETBALL

Dressed casually in all black, Vanderveer received the game ball after the final buzzer. Her dancing players chanted “Tara! Tara!” and gave her a new pullover reading “T-DAWG” to celebrate the latest milestone for the Hall of Fame coach in her 35th season on The Farm and 42nd overall as a college head coach.

Lacie Hull scored 17 points to lead the Cardinal (5-0, 3-0). Lianna Tillman scored 15 points for the Tigers (0-1, 0-1).

After the history-making win, Vanderveer was set to receive a plaque containing a piece of the floor from Stan

ford’s home court at Maples Pavilion. A framed proclamati­on from Palo Alto Mayor Adrian Fine was another memento.

Vanderveer, 67, improved her career record to 1,099253. Connecticu­t coach Geno Auriemma has 1,093 victories.

No. 3 Connecticu­t 92, Seton Hall 65:

At South Orange, N.J., Paige Bueckers scored 25 points for the Huskies (2-0, 1-1), who never trailed and led by as many as 29. Lauren Park-lane scored 29 points for the Pirates (2-2, 0-1) and Desiree Elmore had 11 points and seven rebounds.

No. 10 Texas A&M 99, Sam Houston State 69:

At College Station, Texas, Aaliyah Wilson scored 17 points to lead the Aggies (7-0), who shot shot 59.7 percent. Faith Cook scored 12 points for the Bearkats (2-2), which made 13 of 25 3-pointers.

MEN No. 10 Tennessee 79, Appalachia­n State 38:

At Knoxville, Tenn., Victor

Bailey had 13 points for the Volunteers (3-0), who shot 49 percent. Michael Almonacy led the Mountainee­rs (4-1) with nine points.

■ No. 12 Wisconsin 77, Loyola Chicago 63: At Madison, Wis., Brad Davison and D’mitrik Trice each scored 17 points as the Badgers (5-1) shot 10 of 18 from beyond the arc. Cameron Krutwig scored 19 points to lead the Ramblers (3-1).

■ No. 13 Illinois 92, Minnesota 65: At Champaign, Ill., Kofi Cockburn scored a career-high 33 points and grabbed 13 rebounds to lead the Fighting Illini (5-2). Marcus Carr scored 16 points, making 9 of 10 free throws for the Gophers (6-1).

No. 15 Florida State 74, Georgia Tech 61:

At Tallahasse­e, Fla., Freshman guard Scottie Barnes had 16 points and six rebounds to lead five scorers in double figures for the Seminoles (4-0, 1-0). Michael Devoe had 21 points for the Yellow Jackets (2-3, 0-1), who shot just 25 percent from 3-point range.

■ Virginia Tech 66, No. 24 Clemson 60: At Blacksburg, Va., Tyrece Radford scored 15 points making 5 of 11 shots for the Hokies (5-1, 1-0). Dawes led the Tigers (5-1, 0-1) with a game-high 18 points.

MOUNTAIN WEST New Mexico 104: Our Lady of the Lake 65:

At Houston, Saquan Singleton had 13 points and 10 rebound for the Lobos (2-0). Ethan White had 25 points for the Saints (1-2).
