Barzal, Islanders blitz Capitals
UNIONDALE, N.Y. — Mathew Barzal had three goals and two assists, Jordan Eberle scored twice, and the New York Islanders beat the Washington Capitals 8-4 Thursday.
Brock Nelson, Casey Cizikas and Josh Bailey also scored to help the Islanders improve to 14-1-2 at home and move back into a tie with Washington and Pittsburgh atop the East Division with 50 points.
■ Penguins 4, Bruins 1: At Boston, Mike Matheson scored a highlight-reel goal after a lengthy rush for Pittsburgh, which won its fifth straight and ended an 0-8-2 drought in Boston dating to 2014.
■ Stars 4, Predators 1: At Nashville, Tenn., Joe Pavelski had two assists to back Anton Khudobin, who had 21 saves, as Dallas halted its three-game skid and Nashville’s six-game win streak.
■ Hurricanes 4, Blackhawks 3: At Chicago, Jesper Fast scored the goahead goal with 29 seconds left for Carolina, which pulled within one point of Central co-leaders Tampa Bay and Florida.
■ Lightning 3, Blue Jackets 2: At Tampa, Fla., Brayden Point scored twice for Tampa Bay to back Andrei Vasilevskiy, who had 36 saves, as the Lightning halted a three-game skid.
■ Rangers 3, Sabres 2, OT: At Buffalo, N.Y., Mika Zibanejad scored with 28 seconds left in overtime. Buffalo was outshot 47-23 overall and 36-11 after the first period.
■ Panthers 3, Red Wings 2, OT:
At Sunrise, Fla., Alex Wennberg scored 1:25 into overtime to back Chris Driedger, who had 25 saves in Florida’s fourth straight win.
■ Canadiens 4, Senators 1: At Ottawa, Ontario, Phillip Danault and Brendan Gallagher each had a goal and an assist in Montreal’s third straight win.
