Notable Ovechkin goal key in capping Capitals’ sweep

NEWARK, N.J. — Alex Ovechkin moved into a second-place tie on the all-time list for NHL power-play goals as the Washington Capitals beat the New Jersey Devils 5-4 on Sunday, capping a sweep of their eight-game season series.

Ovechkin’s second-period goal was his 265th with the extra man, tying him with Brett Hull for second place and leaving him nine behind leader Dave Andreychuk (274).

The 35-year-old Russian, who also had two assists, has 19 goals this season and 725 in his career. He is six goals shy of tying Marcel Dionne for fifth place all time in the NHL.

Ilya Samsonov had 35 saves for Washington, which was outshot 3919. Travis Zajac scored twice for New Jersey.

■ Hurricanes 1, Stars 0: At Raleigh, N.C., Petr Mrazek had 28 saves in his first game back after a two-month injury absence, notching his 24th shutout and third this season. Dallas coach Rick Bowness (COVID-19 protocols) left after two periods.

■ Panthers 3, Blue Jackets 0: At Sunrise, Fla., Chris Driedger had 32 saves in his third shutout and second this season, and Aleksander Barkov had a goal and an assist in Florida’s sixth straight win.

■ Coyotes 3, Ducks 2, OT: At Anaheim, Calif., defenseman Jakob Chychrun scored his third goal of the night 1:47 into overtime. Six of his 12 goals this season have come against Anaheim.

■ Red Wings 5, Lightning 1: At Tampa, Fla., Thomas Greiss stopped 27 shots for Detroit in its first regular-season road win over Tampa Bay in 18 meetings dating to Feb. 17, 2011.

■ Maple Leafs 4, Flames 2: At Calgary, Alberta, Auston Matthews and John Tavares each had a goal and an assist for Toronto, which is 6-3-1 in its past 10 games.
