Canucks return, upend Leafs

VANCOUVER, British Columbia — Bo Horvat scored his second goal of the game 1:19 into overtime, giving Vancouver a 3-2 victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs on Sunday in the Canucks’ return from a nearly four-week layoff because of a COVID-19 outbreak.

Horvat also had an assist, Nils Hoglander had a goal and an assist, and Braden Holtby made 37 saves as the Canucks played their first game since March 24. At least 21 players and four members of the coaching staff tested positive for COVID-19, and Vancouver had 11 games postponed since the outbreak hit.

No Canucks players remained on the NHL’S COVID-19 protocol list Sunday, but some of Vancouver’s regular starters remained out, including goaltender Thatcher Demko and former Golden Knights defenseman Nate Schmidt.

William Nylander had a goal and an assist for Toronto, while Auston Matthews added a goal in his return from a nagging wrist injury. The Maple Leafs remained atop the North Division.

2:23 into overtime when his pass went in off Philadelph­ia defenseman Travis Sanheim’s skate, and rookie Ilya Sorokin had 30 saves in his third shutout.

■ Bruins 6, Capitals 3: At Boston, Brad Marchand had two goals and two assists for Boston, which also got two goals each from David Krejci and Patrice Bergeron in its fourth straight win.

■ Rangers 5, Devils 3: At Newark, N.J., Mika Zibanejad scored a go-ahead power-play goal with three minutes left for New York, which beat New Jersey for the fourth time in six days.

■ Sabres 4, Penguins 2: At Buffalo, N.Y., Sam Reinhart scored twice for Buffalo to back Dustin Tokarski, who stopped 34 shots.
