Dejong hits 2 of Cards’ 5 HRS over Nationals

-

Paul Dejong hit two of the Cardinals’ five homers, including a grand slam,

Tommy Edman and Paul Goldschmidt went deep backto-back and St. Louis offered Jack Flaherty his usual strong run support in a 12-5 victory Monday night over the Washington Nationals.

A day after St. Louis was shut out for the second time in four games, Dejong got the offense going by clanging a solo shot off the left-field foul pole in the second inning for the first run allowed by Joe Ross (1-1) in three games this season after he sat out 2020 because of COVID-19 concerns.

Dejong later ended the right-hander’s evening with another drive to left, this one off a high fastball after Dylan Carlson was walked intentionally to load the bases, making it 10-2 in the fifth.

Edman, who hit a 3-0 pitch, and Goldschmidt homered in the third off Ross, whose season ERA went from 0.00 to 5.87 after he gave up 10 runs in 4⅓ innings. Justin Williams added a shot off Ross’ replacement, Kyle Finnegan.

Jake Flaherty went six innings and allowed five runs, three earned. He earned his 500th career strike out in just his 80th game, making him the first Cardinals pitcher to reach that milestone in fewer than 100 appearances.

■ Red Sox 11, White Sox 4: At Boston, Kiké Hernández led off with a replay-aided home run and Bobby Dalbec worked a 14-pitch walk in a six-run first inning. Nathan Eovaldi (3-1) matched his career-high with 10 strikeouts in6 ⅓ innings.

■ Giants 2, Phillies 0: At Philadelphia, Brandon Belt hit a two-run homer to back Kevin Gausman, who struck out five in six innings.

■ Rays 4, Royals 1:

At Kansas City, Mo., Josh Fleming struck out three in 5⅓ innings as the 24-year-old left-hander has allowed just one run in 10⅓ innings this year. Kevin Kiermaier had two hits and two RBIS from the nine-hole and combined with seven-hitter Joey Wendle and eight-hitter Willy Adames for five of Tampa Bay’s seven hits.

■ Rangers 6, Angels 4:

At Anaheim, Calif., Adolis García homered and doubled off Dylan Bundy, and Kohei Arihara (2-1) gave up up just two hits over 5⅔ scoreless innings with two walks and six strikeouts.

■ Brewers 3, Padres 1: At San Diego, Brandon Woodruff and three relievers combined on a two-hitter and Luis Urias homered in his return to Petco Park before leaving with an injury.

■ Mariners 4, Dodgers 3: At Seattle, Jose Marmolejos hit a two-run homer and Taylor Trammell added a home run and two RBIS.
