More teams at 85 percent vaccinated; protocol eased
Two more MLB teams relaxed coronavirus protocols after 85 percent of their players and other on-field personnel completed vaccination, raising the total to 14 of the 30 clubs. The commissioner’s office didn’t identify the teams. Five new virus positives emerged — two players, three staff — among 10,306 tests in the past week, a 0.05 percent rate.
■ Mariners: A member of the team’s traveling party tested positive for COVID-19, causing concern within the organization about potential spread because a “significant” number of players are unvaccinated. Relievers Anthony Misiewicz, Will Vest, Drew Steckenrider and Robert Duggar were placed on the COVID-19 injured list.
■ Yankees: Outfielder Aaron Hicks, sidelined since May 13, will undergo surgery to repair a torn tendon sheath in his left wrist, and the 31-year-old could be sidelined the rest of the season.
■ Phillies: Catcher J.T. Realmuto (left hand contusion) was placed on the 10-day IL. The 30-year-old two-time All-star has batted .294 with four home runs and 17 RBIS in 2021.
■ Brewers: Shortstop Willy Adames and right-handed reliever Trevor Richards were acquired from Tampa Bay for right-handed relievers J.P. Feyereisen and Drew Rasmussen.
■ Mets: First baseman Pete Alonso (right hand sprain) was placed on the 10-day IL. The 26-year-old All-star is hitting .236 with six home runs and 19 RBIS in 2021.
■ Reds: Left-hander Wade Miley (left foot sprain) and center fielder/second baseman Nick Senzel (inflamed left knee) were placed on the 10-day IL.
