Pham, Padres pour it on late, throttle Astros

HOUSTON — Durango product Tommy Pham and Fernando Tatis Jr. homered, and each had an RBI in a seven-run 11th inning that sent the San Diego Padres over the Houston Astros 10-3 on Friday.

The Padres improved to an Mlb-best 7-0 in interleagu­e play this season. The Astros have lost five of six overall.

Pham’s homer came in the third inning, and Tatis tied it at 2-all with his solo shot in the eighth.

It was tied at 3-all to start the 11th when Victor Caratini singled off Brooks Raley (2-3), setting up RBI singles by Ha-seong Kim and Pham.

Brandon Bielak relieved, Jake Cronenwort­h hit an RBI single with one out, and Tatis added a sacrifice fly that made it 7-3 before things got out of hand.

Jorge Mateo reached on an error by second baseman Jose Altuve, and a double by Wil Myers sent another runner home. Jurickson Profar’s single on a ground ball to center field scored two more.

Manny Machado, who had been hampered by a shoulder injury, was 0-for-3 with three strikeouts and a walk in his first start since May 19 when he slapped a double off Ryne Stanek to score Pham and make it 3-2 to start the 10th.

The Astros tied it in the 10th when Alex Bregman scored on a sacrifice fly by Chas Mccormick off Mark Melancon (1-0) to make it 3-all. Altuve flied out with the bases loaded to end the inning.

Jed Lowrie scored the tiebreakin­g run on an error in the seventh, and Bob Melvin tied Tony La Russa for the Oakland record for managerial wins with his 708th.

■ Cardinals 8, Diamondbac­ks 6: At Phoenix, Tyler O’neill and Nolan Arenado each hit a two-run homer off Madison Bumgarner (4-5) as Arizona lost its 12th straight despite an 11-6 edge in hits.

■ Blue Jays 11, Indians 2: At Cleveland, Joe Panik had a two-run homer among his four hits and totaled three RBIS in a game played in 45mph wind gusts and halted in the seventh.

■ Yankees 3, Tigers 2: At Detroit, Robbie Grossman hit a two-out, two-run walk-off homer in the 10th. Rougned Odor had a home run among his four hits for New York.

■ Royals 8, Twins 3: At Minneapoli­s, Whit Merrifield had a two-run double in Kansas City’s five-run seventh to back rookie Kris Bubic (1-0), who allowed one run in six innings.

■ Mariners 3, Rangers 2: At Seattle, Kyle Lewis doubled and scored in the second and hit a two-run homer in the third, and Texas lost its 10th straight road game.

■ Cubs 1, Reds 0: At Chicago, David Bote homered in the fifth, one of three hits by Chicago, to back Adbert Alzolay (3-4), who pitched 52/3 shutout innings.

■ Red Sox 5, Marlins 2: At Boston, Alex Verdugo hit a go-ahead three-run homer in the fifth, and the game was called in the sixth because of rain.

■ Brewers at Nationals, ppd., rain: The game was reschedule­d as part of a doublehead­er Saturday.

■ Orioles at White Sox, ppd., rain: The game was reschedule­d as part of a doublehead­er Saturday.

■ Rockies at Pirates, ppd., rain: The game was reschedule­d as part of a doublehead­er Saturday.

■ Braves at Mets, ppd., rain: No makeup date was set.
