Morikawa falls to Cantlay in playoff

Memorial loses vibe without Rahm

-

DUBLIN, Ohio — Patrick Cantlay delivered a clutch birdie late in the round and a 12-foot par putt in a playoff

to win the Memorial GOLF on a Sunday filled with drama, a little rain and no

Jon Rahm.

Cantlay closed with a 1-under-par 71 and won the Memorial for the second time in three years, and he said he felt the same range of emotions in the final hour at Muirfield Village in his duel with Las Vegas resident Collin Morikawa.

But it wasn’t the same.

A day earlier, Cantlay walked off the 18th green six shots behind Rahm, whose 64 ranked as one of the great rounds at the course Jack Nicklaus built and tied two Memorial records.

But he tested positive for COVID-19 and was withdrawn from the tournament. So Cantlay and Morikawa went from six shots behind to tied for the lead.

The round was halted for five minutes because of a pop-up downpour while they were on the 17th green. When it resumed, Cantlay holed a 25-foot birdie putt to tie. Cantlay had a 25-foot birdie putt for the win on the 18th in regulation that grazed the right side of the cup, leaving he and Morikawa (71) at 13-under 275.

■ USGA: At San Francisco, Yuka Saso birdied the third playoff hole to beat Nasa Hataoka and become the second teenager to win the

U.S. Women’s Open. Saso overcame back-to-back early double bogeys to make the playoff. She won with a 10foot putt to become the first Filipino to win a major.

Saso matched 2008 winner Inbee Park, a Bishop Gorman product, as the youngest U.S. Women’s Open champion at 19 years, 11 months, 17 days. Saso shot a final-round 2-over 73 to tie Hatoka (68) at 4-under 280, one stroke better than third-round leader Lexi Thompson (75).

■ Champions: At Des Moines, Iowa, Stephen Ames overcame a seven-stroke deficit entering the Principal Charity Classic’s final round to notch his second tour title. The 57-year-old shot 5-under 67 for a 12-under 204 total, one shot better than Mike Weir (69). Second-round leader Tim Herron (76) tied for third, two strokes back.

■ European PGA: At Hamburg, Germany, Maverick Antcliff shot 4-under 68 to share a one-stroke lead with Matthew Southgate (69) at 5-under 139 entering the Porsche European Open’s final round. Four players were tied for third. UNLV product Kurt Kitayama (73) was six shots back.
