Red Sox ambush Cole, rout Yanks to wrap up sweep

BOSTON — Kike Hernandez and Rafael Devers homered in the first inning as the Boston Red Sox hammered Gerrit Cole, routing the New York Yankees 9-2 Sunday to complete a second straight sweep of their longtime rivals.

J.D. Martinez and Christian Vazquez also homered for the Red Sox. Boston outscored the Yankees 18-7 in this three-game set, moving to 6-0 against them this year and improving to a season-best 16 games above .500.

Eduardo Rodriguez (64) notched his first win in nine starts. He gave up a two-run homer to Aaron Judge in the sixth but held New York to five hits and struck out eight in six innings.

Cole (8-4) allowed six runs on eight hits, including three homers, in five innings. Never before in his nine major league seasons had Cole surrendere­d multiple first-inning homers.

■ Pirates 7, Cardinals 2: At St. Louis, Max Kranick (1-0) pitched five perfect innings for Pittsburgh in his major league debut before a 64-minute rain delay forced him from the game.

■ Mariners 3-5, White Sox 2-7: At Chicago, Taylor Trammell homered twice to lift Seattle in Game 1. Zach Collins drove in four runs with two doubles in Game 2, giving Chicago a split.

■ Brewers 5, Rockies 0: At Milwaukee, Keston Hiura homered, doubled and drove in three runs to back Eric Lauer (2-3), who allowed two hits in six scoreless innings.

■ Rangers 4, Royals 1: At Arlington, Texas, Bishop Gorman product Joey Gallo hit a two-run homer to back Jordan Lyles (3-5), who allowed one run in seven innings.

■ Nationals 5, Marlins 1: At Miami, Trea Turner and Josh Bell each hit a two-run homer to back Max Scherzer (7-4), who allowed one run in six innings.

■ Dodgers 7, Cubs 1: At Los Angeles, Zach Mckinstry hit a grand slam in the second to back Clayton Kershaw (9-7), who struck out 13 in eight innings.

■ Angels 6, Rays 4: At St. Petersburg, Fla., Shohei Ohtani hit his 25th home run of the season, an RBI triple and an RBI double for Los Angeles.

■ Braves 4, Reds 0: At Cincinnati, Kyle Muller (1-1) allowed one hit and struck out nine in five shutout innings for his first major league win.

■ Blue Jays 5, Orioles 2: At Buffalo, N.Y., Vladimir Guerrero Jr. had a two-run double for Toronto to raise his majors-best RBI total to 66.

■ Athletics 6, Giants 2: At San Francisco, Cole Irvin (6-7) struck out eight in eight shutout innings to remain unbeaten in five June starts.

■ Tigers 2, Astros 1: At Detroit, Robbie Grossman had a walk-off squeeze bunt in the 10th, and Detroit moved to 5-2 against Houston.

■ Phillies 4, Mets 2: At New York, Zack Wheeler (6-4) shut out his ex-team on four hits over seven innings, with eight strikeouts.

■ Padres 5, Diamondbac­ks 4: At San Diego, Fernando Tatis Jr. hit a go-ahead RBI double in San Diego’s three-run seventh.

■ Twins 8, Indians 2: At Minneapoli­s, Nelson Cruz’s three-run shot was one of three Minnesota home runs.
