Cardinals take two; win streak extended to 14

CHICAGO — The St. Louis Cardinals emphatical­ly matched a team record with their 14th straight win Friday, pounding the Chicago Cubs 12-4 in the second game of doublehead­er behind Tyler O’neill’s three-run homer and two solo shots by Lars Nootbaar. The Cardinals won the opener 8-5.

Harrison Bader had a solo homer, a double and a single as St. Louis batters went deep five times in the nightcap to equal a win streak set in July 1935. The run has rocketed the Cards into control of the second National League wild card, leading Philadelph­ia by five games.

■ Giants 7, Rockies 2: At Denver, Mike Yastrzemsk­i’s three-run shot was one of four homers by San Francisco, which became the season’s first 100-win team. The Giants stayed one game ahead of Los Angeles atop the NL West.

■ Mariners 6, Angels 5: At Anaheim, Calif., Bishop Gorman product Paul Sewald pitched into and out of a bases-loaded jam in the ninth for Seattle, which moved within two games of New York for the last AL wild card.

■ Yankees 8, Red Sox 3: At Boston, Giancarlo Stanton hit a three-run homer to back Gerrit Cole (16-8), who took a two-hit shutout into the sixth, as New York pulled within one game of Boston for the top AL wild card.

■ White Sox 1, Indians 0: At Cleveland, Luis Robert homered in the fifth to back Dylan Cease (13-7), who exited after being hit on the right arm by a comebacker. He struck out nine in 5⅓ shutout innings.

■ Twins 3, Blue Jays 1: At Minneapoli­s, Byron Buxton hit a two-run homer in a three-run third against ex-minnesota ace Jose Berrios (12-9). Toronto fell two games behind New York for the last AL wild card.

■ Rays 8, Marlins 0: At St. Petersburg, Fla., Randy Arozarena hit a three-run double in the first to back Ryan Yarbrough (9-6), who allowed two hits in six innings of shutout relief.

■ Padres 6, Braves 5: At San Diego, Fernando Tatis Jr. hit a go-ahead home run leading off the San Diego seventh. Atlanta’s NL East lead over Philadelph­ia shrunk to 1½ games.

■ Dodgers 4, Diamondbac­ks 2: At Phoenix, A.J. Pollock hit a two-run homer in Los Angeles’ three-run second to back Tony Gonsolin (4-1), who struck out seven in five innings.

■ Brewers 5, Mets 1: At Milwaukee, Christian Yelich, Kolten Wong and Willy Adames homered to back Eric Lauer (7-5), who allowed one run in 6⅔ innings.

■ Royals 3, Tigers 1: At Detroit, Whit Merrifield hit two sacrifice flies to back Carlos Hernandez, who pitched five shutout innings.

■ Phillies 8, Pirates 6: At Philadelph­ia, Didi Gregorius hit a go-ahead three-run homer in the Philadelph­ia seventh.

■ Rangers 8, Orioles 5: At Baltimore, Adolis Garcia hit a go-ahead two-run double in Texas’ five-run ninth.
