Arizona rides defense past Niners to remain unbeaten

The Arizona Cardinals improved to 5-0 for the first time since 1974, riding a stellar defensive performance to a 17-10 win over the visiting San Francisco 49ers.

Wide receiver Deandre Hopkins hauled in a difficult 9-yard TD catch with 5:13 left, hanging onto the ball despite tight defense from Niners cornerback Josh Norman. That put the Cardinals up 17-7.

Kyler Murray was 22 of 31 passing for 239 yards, and Hopkins caught six passes for 87 yards. Rookie QB Trey Lance had an up-and-down first start for the 49ers (2-3), going 15 of 29 passing for 192 yards and one interception. He ran for a teamhigh 89 yards. San Francisco wide receiver Deebo Samuel had a 13-yard TD.

■ Cowboys 44, Giants 20: At Arlington, Texas, Dak Prescott threw for three TDS, and cornerback Trevon Diggs had an interception for a fifth straight game for Dallas (4-1), which won its fourth straight. New York (1-4), already injury-plagued, lost running back Saquon Barkley (ankle sprain) and QB Daniel Jones (concussion).

■ Eagles 21, Panthers 18: At Charlotte, N.C., QB Jalen Hurts ran for two secondhalf TDS for Philadelphia (2-3), which overcame a 12-point deficit. Chuba Hubbard ran for 101 yards for Carolina (3-2), which yielded 88 first-half yards. Sam Darnold was intercepted three times, twice by Eagles cornerback Darius Slay, and sacked three times.

■ Vikings 19, Lions 17: At Minneapolis, Greg Joseph kicked four field goals for Minnesota (2-3), including a career-best 55-yarder and a 54-yarder as time expired. Detroit (0-5) had converted a go-ahead 2-point conversion with 37 seconds left. Vikings running back Alexander Mattison had 153 yards of offense and a TD.

■ Saints 33, Washington 22: At Landover, Md., Jameis Winston connected on a 49-yard Hail Mary on the first half ’s final play for one of his four TD passes for New Orleans (3-2). Alvin Kamara had 151 yards of offense and a TD for the Saints. Antonio Gibson ran for two TDS for Washington (2-3).
