Pitino-coached Iona notches historic win over No. 10 Tide

Iona, coached by Rick Pitino, became the first Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference team to beat an AP top-10 team in 120 tries after upsetting No. 10 Alabama 72-68 on Thursday in Lake Buena Vista, Florida. Nelly Junior Joseph and Walter Clayton Jr. each made free throws in the final 20 seconds for the Gaels (6-0). The Crimson Tide (4-1) led 33-29 at halftime.

■ No. 4 Kansas 71, North Texas 59: At Lake Buena Vista, Fla., Ochai Agbaji had 18 points for the Jayhawks (4-0) while becoming the program’s 63rd player to reach 1,000 points.

■ No. 6 Baylor 69, Virginia Commonweal­th 61: At Paradise Island, Bahamas, Matthew Mayer scored 15 points for the Bears (6-0), who had 18 turnovers. The Rams (3-3) trailed 29-27 at halftime.

■ No. 19 Auburn 62, Loyola-chicago 53: At Paradise Island, Bahamas, Walker Kessler had 13 points and 10 rebounds for the Tigers (4-1). The Ramblers (4-2) were held to two field goals in an 11-minute second-half span.

■ Michigan State 64, No. 22 Connecticu­t 60: At Paradise Island, Bahamas, A.J. Hoggard hit the go-ahead free throws with 30.3 seconds left for the Spartans (5-1). Adama Sonogo had 18 points and 10 rebounds for the Huskies (5-1).

■ No. 24 Southern California 70, Saint Joseph’s 55: At Anaheim, Calif., Boogie Ellis scored 17 points for the Trojans (5-0), who held the Hawks (2-3) to 35.4 percent shooting.

■ Alabama-birmingham 86, New Mexico 73: Jordan Walker scored 26 points for the Blazers (51), who led 42-37 at halftime. The Lobos (4-2) were outrebound­ed 41-27.

■ San Francisco 71, Towson 61: Jamaree Bouyea scored 20 points for the Dons (7-0), who held the Tigers (3-3) to 37.8 percent shooting.

■ South Alabama 68, San Diego 67: Charles Manning Jr. and Jay Jay Chandler each scored 21 points for the Jaguars (4-2), who went ahead to stay with 5:24 left. The Toreros (3-3) led 38-31 at halftime.

■ Hawaii 88, Illinois-chicago 80: Mate Colina scored 23 points for the Rainbow Warriors (3-1), who didn’t trail.

WOMEN

■ No. 5 North Carolina State 78, No. 2 Maryland 60: At Nassau, Bahamas, Elissa Cunane scored 20 points on 8-for-9 shooting for the Wolfpack (5-1), who dealt the Terrapins (6-1) their most decisive loss since 2017.

■ No. 7 Stanford 69, No. 4 Indiana 66: At Nassau, Bahamas, Cameron Brink had 21 points, 22 rebounds, five blocks and five assists for the Cardinal (4-1). The Hoosiers (4-1) were held without a field goal for a 5:19 second-half stretch.

■ No. 6 Baylor 68, Fordham 45: At Cancun, Mexico, Nalyssa Smith had 19 points and 15 rebounds for the Lady Bears (4-1), who shot 29.6 percent in the first half.

■ No. 9 Arizona 48, Vanderbilt 46: At St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands, Shaina Pellington hit an off-balance layup at the buzzer for the Wildcats (5-0). The Commodores (3-3) trailed by 15 points in the second half.
