Nevada fishing report

-

■ Lake Mead — Boaters have had success for 2- to 4-pound striped bass using umbrella rigs. Pencil poppers and Whopper Ploppers also are popular choices. Black bass are attacking soft shad swimbaits and green pumpkin worms on Ned rigs near rocks and vegetation. Catfish action has been hit or miss. Anchovies produce the best results when fished at night.

■ Lake Mohave/willow Beach — Boaters have had luck for striped bass when casting and trolling swimbaits south of the marina. Whopper Ploppers and soft pearl swimbaits are tempting stripers in Cottonwood Basin and just above

Davis Dam. Shore anglers are throwing glidebaits to land black bass.

■ Laughlin — Shore anglers are catching rainbow trout with spinners and grubs. Striped bass are biting lures in shad and rainbow trout patterns. One angler reeled in a 16-pound striper on a trout jig in Casino Row. Catfish are taking hot dogs and anchovies in marshy areas around Big Bend State Recreation Area.

■ Las Vegas urban ponds — Rainbow trout have been stocked since midnovember. Night crawler pieces and Powerbait are the best trout baits. Small fly patterns, such as Pheasant Tails and Hare’s Ear nymphs, are great on a fly rod or a couple of feet below a bobber. Catfish also are being caught with night crawlers or chicken livers.

■ Kirch Wildlife Management Area — Despite cold nighttime temperatures and snow, reservoir ice is treacherous, with minimal thickening. Use extreme caution. Stay off anything less than 4 inches thick. Shore fishing is limited to open water, which varies each day.

■ Eagle Valley Reservoir — Rainbow trout have been caught with night crawlers and Powerbait. The dock still is removed. Park rangers urge visitors to use caution before walking on the ice. Spring Valley State Park recently received lots of snow, so travel safely in the area.

■ Echo Canyon Reservoir — The reservoir is almost completely covered in thin ice, but conditions remain unsafe. Park rangers are urging visitors to use extreme caution. Contact Echo Canyon State Park at 775-962-5103 for up-to-date ice conditions.
