New York deals Voit to Padres
The New York Yankees traded first baseman Luke Voit to San Diego on Thursday for right-hander Justin Lange, the 34th pick of the 2020 draft.
Voit, 31, led the majors in home runs with 22 during the pandemic-shortened 2020 season, when he hit .277.
He made four trips to the injured list last year, three stints because of a left knee that had surgery on March 29 to repair a torn meniscus.
Voit, a .267 hitter in parts of five major league seasons, joined the Yankees from St. Louis in July 2018 in a trade for two relievers, right-hander Giovanny Gallegos and left-hander Chasen Shreve, a Bonanza and College of Southern Nevada product.
Lange, 20, was 0-3 with a 6.95 ERA in nine starts last season for the rookie-level Arizona Complex League Padres, striking out 29 and walking 15 in 22 innings.
■ Cardinals: Free-agent outfielder Corey Dickerson agreed to a one-year, $5 million deal. The 32-year-old, a .283 hitter with 128 home runs in nine major league seasons with six teams, was an All-star in 2017 and won a Gold Glove in 2018.
Also, reliever Alex Reyes was diagnosed with a frayed labrum in his right shoulder and is expected to be sidelined until June. The 27-year-old right-hander had a 3.24 ERA, 29 saves and 95 strikeouts in 72⅓ innings last season.
■ Astros: At Jupiter, Fla., right-hander Justin Verlander pitched two hitless innings in Houston’s 4-2 loss to St. Louis, his first time facing major league hitters in 20 months. The 39-yearold eight-time All-star, who underwent Tommy John surgery in September 2020, kept his fastball in the 95 mph range Friday. He walked one and struck out Paul Goldschmidt and Paul Dejong swinging.
■ Braves: Free-agent reliever Kenley Jansen agreed to a one-year, $16 million deal. The 34-year-old threetime All-star right-hander had spent his entire 12-year major league career with the Los Angeles Dodgers, notching a 2.37 ERA and 350 saves. Only Craig Kimbrel (372) has more saves since Jansen’s 2010 debut.
■ Angels: Free-agent reliever Ryan Tepera agreed to a two-year, $14 million deal. The 34-year-old righthander has a 3.48 ERA in seven major league seasons with three teams. He had his best season in 2021, posting a 2.79 ERA and 74 strikeouts in 61⅓ innings with both Chicago teams.
■ Cubs: Right-hander Adbert Alzolay (right shoulder strain) was placed on the 60day IL. The 27-year-old, who missed four months with a similar injury in 2018, was 5-13 with a 4.58 ERA in 29 games — including 21 starts — in 2021.
■ Dodgers: Free-agent left-hander Tyler Anderson agreed to a one-year, $8 million deal. The 32-year-old Spring Valley product — a first-round draft pick by Colorado in 2011 — is 29-38 with a 4.62 ERA in six major league seasons with four teams.
