Baseball team caps sweep with 23-hit, 27-run splurge

Joey Walls went 4-for-5 with a home run, three doubles and six RBIS to lead UNLV’S 23-hit attack in its 27-6 win over host New Mexico on Sunday, capping a sweep of a three-game Mountain West baseball series. The Rebels (19-9, 11-1), who have won five straight, are off to their best start through 12 league games. Walls had a go-ahead RBI double in the third inning, an RBI double in UNLV’S 10-run fifth and a grand slam in the sixth. Eric Bigani, Rylan Charles and Diego Alarcon each went 3-for-5 for the Rebels, and Bigani, Charles and Braden Murphy homered. Lenny Junior Ashby and Sean Stephens each went 3-for-5 with two RBIS for the Lobos (1216, 5-7), who had 13 hits.

■ Softball: At Boise, Idaho, freshman Ariana Martinez capped the Rebels’ six-run fifth inning with a grand slam as they downed Boise State 8-5 to cap a sweep of a three-game Mountain West series. UNLV (27-6, 5-1) became the first league team to win three straight in Boise since 2016. Mia Trejo went 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBIS for the Rebels in their seventh straight win. Kelsey Lalor went 2-for-4 with a homer and three RBIS for the 25th-ranked Broncos (27-8, 6-3), who were outhit 12-8.

■ Women’s tennis: At Fresno, Calif., Cindy Hu and Coco Zhao each won in singles and doubles to lead the Rebels (13-3, 3-1 Mountain West) to a 4-0 victory over San Jose State (4-10, 0-4).

■ Men’s tennis: At Boise, Idaho, Christophe­r Bulus and Milos Dabic won in singles for the Rebels (11-11, 0-2 Mountain West) in their 4-2 loss to

Boise State (12-7, 1-1).
