Women’s tennis team tops UNR, moves to league final

Molly Helgesson and Zita Kovacs won at Nos. 1 and 2 singles and teamed for a No. 1 doubles victory to help fourthseed­ed UNLV blank eighth-seeded UNR 4-0 in a Mountain West women’s tennis championsh­ip semifinal Friday in Oro Valley, Arizona. The Rebels (19-5) moved to the final for the fifth straight time. They will face No. 3 seed San Diego State (16-6), a 4-1 winner over No. 2 seed Colorado State (15-8), at 11 a.m. Saturday for the title.

■ Men’s tennis: At Colorado Springs, Colo., Christophe­r Bulus became the seventh Rebels men’s player to be voted conference player of the year.

The senior Nigeria native won at No. 1 singles Friday as seventh-seeded UNLV (12-15) lost 4-1 to second-seeded Utah State (11-11) in a Mountain West championsh­ip quarterfin­al. Bulus, ranked 85th nationally, went 21-6 this season.

■ Baseball: At Colorado Springs, Colo., Aerik Joe went 5-for-5 with a home run, a triple and three RBIS to help Air Force rout the first-place Rebels 20-3. Sam Kulasingam also went 5-for-5 and had two doubles for the Falcons (20-22, 8-11 Mountain West), who had a 25-10 edge in hits. Paul Skenes held UNLV (29-14, 17-5) to no earned runs and struck out eight in six innings. Diego Alarcon went 3-for-4 for the Rebels.

■ Softball: At Albuquerqu­e, N.M., Denise Armendariz went 3-for-4 with four RBIS to lead the Rebels past New Mexico 11-1. Ariana Martinez went 3-for-4 with three RBIS as the Rebels (33-11, 11-5 Mountain West) had a 16-5 edge in hits. Jenny Bressler (20-6) held the Lobos (25-20, 5-11) to one run in five innings.

■ Men’s golf: At Bremerton, Wash., Caden Fioroni shot 1-under-par 71 to tie for 11th in a 53-player field after the Mountain West championsh­ip’s first round. The Rebels were tied for sixth in the 11-team field at 5-over 293, 13 strokes behind pace-setting Colorado State.

■ Volleyball: Coach Dawn Sullivan signed a five-year extension through 2026. Sullivan is 83-24 in four seasons and guided the Rebels to the 2020 NCAA Tournament. They won the National Invitation­al Volleyball Championsh­ip last season.
