Ohtani keys Angels’ late rally

Tying two-run double, Rendon’s single foil Nationals in ninth

-

ANAHEIM, Calif. — Shohei Ohtani hit a tying two-run double in the ninth inning, and Anthony Rendon followed with a walk-off RBI single against his former team as the Los Angeles Angels beat Washington 5-4 on Sunday.

SUNDAY’S MLB GAMES

The Angels trailed 4-2 going into the ninth. Luis Rengifo drew a walk with one out and advanced to third on Taylor Ward’s single. Mike Trout struck out before Ohtani lined a two-run double to center off Tanner Rainey (0-1). The reigning American League MVP had been 1-for-11 in the series.

Rendon then lined a single to center, and Ohtani slid to avoid Victor Robles’ throw home to give the Halos the weekend series.

Rendon had two hits to sink a team with which he spent seven seasons, winning a World Series title in 2019. Jack Mayfield snapped an 0-for-11 slump with a pinch two-run single for the Angels, and Jaime Barria (1-0) got the win.

Erick Fedde, a Las Vegas High and UNLV product, had his second straight strong start for the Nationals — allowing two hits in five shutout innings, with four strikeouts. The 29-year-old right-hander went seven innings Tuesday at Colorado and has allowed one earned run in his past 12 innings.

Cesar Hernandez had three hits and Alcides Escobar two hits and an RBI for Washington, which totaled 11 hits — all singles. Lane Thomas had a sacrifice fly that helped the Nationals build a 3-0 lead.

Los Angeles starter Patrick Sandoval allowed three runs on seven hits with five strikeouts in 5⅔ innings.

“What’s so fun about this team and this offense is that we can ignite at anytime,” Rendon said. “We’ve had some games where we’ve ignited early and our pitching

shuts them down the rest of the game, and we’ve had games where we’ve been shutout as hitters through eight innings on and then we come in and win it.”
