Scherzer exits with injury as Mets nab win

NEW YORK — Max Scherzer pulled himself from a start Wednesday with discomfort in his left side before the New York Mets finished an 11-4 victory over St. Louis.

Scherzer (5-1), an eight-time All-star, threw 61 of his 87 pitches for strikes and exited with a 6-2 lead against his hometown team. The 37-year-old three-time Cy Young Award winner will have an MRI examinatio­n Thursday.

Pete Alonso homered and drove in four runs for the Mets (25-14), who improved to 13-1 following a loss. Jeff Mcneil had a two-run single in the first, and Alonso snapped a 2-all tie with an RBI single off rookie reliever Jake Walsh (0-1) in New York’s four-run fifth. Mets batters were hit by pitches three times, increasing their major league-leading total to 28. That includes eight by Cardinals pitchers in six games.

Both benches were warned Wednesday after Mark Canha was hit near the ribs by a 98 mph fastball from St. Louis’ Jordan Hicks in the third, but there was no trouble between the teams. Canha scored three times and had an RBI single.

■ Yankees 3, Orioles 2: At Baltimore, Gleyber Torres hit an RBI double and scored in New York’s three-run first to back Gerrit Cole (4-0), who allowed two runs in seven innings.

■ Red Sox 5, Astros 1: At Boston, Nick Pivetta (2-4) pitched a two-hitter with eight strikeouts in the first complete game by a Boston pitcher since Chris Sale on June 5, 2019.

■ Dodgers 5, Diamondbac­ks 3: At Los Angeles, Justin Turner hit a go-ahead three-run homer in the Los Angeles fourth as the Dodgers capped a four-game sweep.

■ Royals 6, White Sox 2: At Kansas City, Mo., Bobby Witt Jr. and M.J. Melendez homered, and fellow Kansas City rookie Emmanuel Rivera hit a go-ahead RBI triple.

■ Mariners 5, Blue Jays 1: At Toronto, Ty France hit a two-run homer, and Marco Gonzales (2-4) allowed one run in six innings to end a fivestart winless streak.

■ Cubs 3, Pirates 2: At Chicago, Pittsburgh rookie Jack Suwinski, who attended high school 20 minutes from Wrigley Field, hit a tiebreakin­g home run in the fifth.

■ Rays 6, Tigers 1: At St. Petersburg, Fla., Isaac Paredes homered twice against his ex-team to back Drew Rasmussen (4-1), who pitched five shutout innings.

■ Rockies 5, Giants 3: At Denver, C.J. Cron hit a tiebreakin­g two-run homer in a three-run eighth by Colorado, which had lost 12 straight to San Francisco.

■ Twins 14, Athletics 4: At Oakland, Calif., Carlos Correa went 2-for-4 with an RBI double for Minnesota in his return from an 11-game injury absence.

■ Brewers 7, Braves 6: At Milwaukee, Keston Hiura hit a walk-off two-run homer in the 11th, hours after being recalled from Triple-a Nashville.

■ Rangers 6, Angels 5: At Arlington, Texas, Nathaniel Lowe hit a walk-off two-run homer in the 10th, and Texas capped a three-game sweep.

■ Phillies 3, Padres 0: At Philadelph­ia, Rhys Hoskins homered to back Zack Wheeler (2-3), who struck out nine in seven shutout innings.

■ Nationals 5, Marlins 4: At Miami, Keibert Ruiz’s three hits included a go-ahead RBI double in the Washington 10th.

■ Reds at Guardians, ppd., rain: The game was reschedule­d for Thursday.
