Kane’s hat trick powers Oilers past Flames

EDMONTON, Alberta — Evander Kane scored three goals in a six-minute span in the second period, Leon Draisaitl set an NHL record with four assists in one playoff period, and Edmonton defeated Calgary 4-1 on Sunday to take a 2-1 lead in their second-round series.

Zach Hyman had the other goal for the Oilers, and Connor Mcdavid had three assists. Mike Smith, who briefly was replaced by Mikko Koskinen in the third period after getting run over by Flames left wing Milan Lucic, had 31 saves. Koskinen wasn’t forced to make a stop in just over four minutes.

Oliver Kylington scored for Calgary. Jacob Markstrom allowed four goals on 34 shots before getting pulled for the Flames, who have been outscored 8-1 since taking a 3-1 lead in the second period of Game 2. Dan Vladar had seven saves in relief.

Mcdavid has 23 points (six goals, 17 assists) through 10 playoff games. The lone players in NHL postseason history with more points in the same span are Wayne Gretzky (29 in 1983; 25 in 1985) and Mario Lemieux (25 in 1992).

■ Lightning 5, Panthers 1: At Tampa, Fla., Steven Stamkos scored twice to back

Andrei Vasilevski­y, who had 34 saves, as defending Stanley Cup champion Tampa Bay took a 3-0 series lead.

Nikita Kucherov had a goal and three assists as the Lightning moved one win from their sixth Eastern Conference finals berth in the past eight years.

Sam Reinhart scored to halt Presidents’ Trophy-winning Florida’s 0-for-25 postseason power-play drought. Sergei Bobrovsky stopped 31 of 34 shots for the Panthers.

■ Rangers 3, Hurricanes 1: At New York, Mika Zibanejad had a goal and an assist to back Igor Shesterkin, who stopped 43 shots, as New York cut its series deficit to 2-1.

Chris Kreider and Tyler Motte also scored for the Rangers in their second win over Carolina in the teams’ past 10 meetings, dating to the 2020 playoff qualifying round.

Nino Niederreit­er scored, and Antti Raanta had 30 saves for the Hurricanes, who fell to 0-4 on the road this postseason to go with their 6-0 home mark.
