Ohtani adds to legend, powers Angels’ victory

MIAMI — Shohei Ohtani made more major league history while pitching and hitting the Los Angeles Angels past Miami 5-2 on Wednesday.

The reigning American League MVP allowed one unearned run on two hits and three walks while striking out 10 in seven innings and hit a go-ahead two-run single before 18,741, the fourth-largest crowd at Loandepot Park this season.

Ohtani (8-4) became the first major leaguer to have two RBIS, a stolen base and 10 strikeouts in the same game as he won his fifth straight start.

Max Stassi doubled and reached base three times to help the Angels snap their four-game skid and the Marlins’ six-game win streak.

Ohtani’s two-run single with the bases loaded chased Miami starter Trevor Rogers (4-7) and capped a three-run fifth that put the Angels up 3-1. Mike Trout was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, tying it at 1. Rogers allowed three runs in 4⅔ innings.

■ Nationals 3, Phillies 2: At Philadelph­ia, Luis Garcia hit a go-ahead two-run double in the seventh to back Josiah Gray (7-5), who shook off two homers by Kyle Schwarber to strike out 11 in six innings. Schwarber had three of Philadelph­ia’s four hits.

■ Royals 7, Astros 4: At Houston, Whit Merrifield, Hunter Dozier and Emmanuel Rivera homered for Kansas City in the first two innings off Cristian Javier (6-4), who had allowed one hit in 14 innings over his previous two starts.

■ Cubs 2, Brewers 1: At Milwaukee, P.J. Higgins hit a tiebreakin­g RBI double off Josh Hader (0-2) with two outs in the Chicago ninth. Milwaukee starter Corbin Burnes struck out 10 in seven shutout innings.

■ Rays 7, Red Sox 1: At Boston, Randy Arozarena hit a two-run double and a homer, and Corey Kluber (4-5) pitched six shutout innings to beat Brayan Bello (0-1) in the top Boston pitching prospect’s debut.

■ Blue Jays 2, Athletics 1: At Oakland, Calif., Matt Chapman hit a tying homer in the Toronto seventh, and Bo Bichette went deep in the eighth as the Jays ended a five-game skid.

■ Giants 7, Diamondbac­ks 5: At Phoenix, Austin Slater hit a tiebreakin­g two-run double in San Francisco’s three-run ninth, capping the Giants’ rally from a 4-0 deficit.

■ Braves 3, Cardinals 0: At Atlanta, Marcell Ozuna and Eddie Rosario hit consecutiv­e homers in the fifth to back Max Fried (9-2), who pitched six shutout innings.

■ Mets 8, Reds 3: At Cincinnati, Brandon Nimmo’s three-run homer capped New York’s fiverun 10th. Nimmo scored on Starling Marte’s tying RBI double in the ninth.

■ Tigers 8, Guardians 2: At Detroit, Miguel Cabrera hit a two-run single and totaled three RBIS as Detroit capped its first four-game sweep of Cleveland since 2013.

■ Dodgers 2, Rockies 1: At Los Angeles, Mookie Betts hit a walk-off infield single in the ninth that scored Cody Bellinger, who had three hits and scored twice.

■ White Sox 9, Twins 8: At Chicago, Andrew Vaughn hit a tying two-run homer in the Chicago eighth, and Leury Garcia had a walk-off RBI single in the 10th.

■ Yankees 16, Pirates 0: At Pittsburgh, Aaron Judge and Aaron Hicks each hit a grand slam to back Luis Severino (5-3), who pitched six shutout innings.

■ Orioles 2, Rangers 1: At Baltimore, Spenser Watkins (2-1) held Texas to one run over 6⅔ innings in his first start of more than six innings.
