White Sox’s La Russa, 77, sidelined with heart issue

Chicago White Sox manager Tony La Russa is out indefinite­ly because of a heart condition. The 77-year-old Hall of Famer missed the team’s game Tuesday on his doctors’ recommenda­tion and is to undergo additional testing “over the coming days.” Bench coach Miguel Cairo will continue to serve as acting manager in La Russa’s absence.

■ Obit: Lee Thomas, a two-time Allstar in eight major league seasons with six teams who became the architect of the 1993 National League champion Philadelph­ia Phillies, died Wednesday at his St. Louis home of undisclose­d causes. He was 86. Thomas was the Phillies’ general manager from 1988 to 1997 and served in front-office roles with St. Louis, Boston, Milwaukee and Baltimore.

■ Orioles: Infielder Gunnar Henderson, ranked the game’s No. 1 prospect by Baseball America, was promoted from Triple-a Norfolk. The 21-year-old, a second-round draft pick in 2019, has hit .297 with 19 homers, 76 RBIS, 22 steals and a .946 OPS in 112 minor league games this season.

■ Schedule: The majors’ 2023 exhibition season is to begin with two games Feb. 24, with all 30 teams slated to play Feb. 25, the start of what could be the first normal spring training since 2019. Opening day is set for March 30.

■ Rays: All-star left-hander Shane Mcclanahan (left shoulder impingemen­t) was placed on the 15-day injured list.

The 25-year-old is 11-5 with a 2.20 ERA and 182 strikeouts in 147⅓ innings over 24 starts this season.

■ Padres: San Diego will serve as the home team for two games against San Francisco on April 29 and 30 in the majors’ first regular-season games in Mexico City.
