Foothill product Madris excels as Durham takes Triple-a title

Madris went 4-for-5 with two doubles and four RBIS to lead Durham past Reno 10-6 for the Triple-a championship Sunday at Las Vegas Ballpark.
Madris, a 26-year-old outfielder/first baseman, hit a two-run double in the Bulls’ three-run third inning, a tying RBI single in the seventh and a tying RBI double off the top of the wall in right during Durham’s five-run ninth.
Coupled with his efforts Saturday in the International League title game, Madris finished the postseason 6-for-9 with four doubles and eight RBIS.
Madris made his major league debut this season, playing 39 games with Pittsburgh. Tampa Bay claimed him off waivers Sept. 16 and assigned him to Durham. He hit .317 with four homers and 15 RBIS in 10 regular-season games with the Bulls.
On Sunday, neither starting pitcher made it out of the third inning. Taj Bradley allowed five runs in 2⅓ innings for the Bulls (88-64), and Denyi Olivero was pulled in the second after yielding four runs for the Aces (86-64).
Dominic Canzone’s solo homer in the eighth put Reno up 6-5. In the ninth, after Madris’ tying RBI double, Rene Pinto drove in the go-ahead run with a single. Tristan Gray, who hit 33 regular-season homers, then blasted a three-run shot to right.
Alek Thomas went 2-for-5 with a two-run homer for the Aces, the Arizona Diamondbacks’ top affiliate, who were outhit 13-10.
Chris Muller, who pitched the eighth, was credited with the win despite allowing Canzone’s tiebreaking homer. J.B. Wendelken lost after allowing four runs on two hits and three walks in the ninth.
