Braves cap key sweep of Mets, nab tiebreaker

Dansby Swanson and Matt Olson each homered for a third straight game, Travis d’arnaud hit a go-ahead two-run single in the third inning, Atlanta beat the New York Mets 5-3 on Sunday to win a critical tiebreaker in their season series.

The defending World Series champion Braves swept the three-game set and moved two games ahead of New York in the National League East. Any combinatio­n of one Atlanta win or one Mets loss would give the Braves their fifth straight division title.

New York plays its final regular-season games against Washington, which is last in the division. Atlanta goes to Miami. Should the season end Wednesday in a tie, the Braves would win the NL East because they won the season series 10-9.

Atlanta won five of the last six games in the series, outscoring the Mets 42-19 over that stretch. New York had a 10½-game lead on June 1 but now is the lower in the standings than at any point this season.

■ Phillies 8, Nationals 1: At Washington, Bryson Stott hit a two-run double and an RBI groundout to back Zack Wheeler (12-7), who pitched five shutout innings. Philadelph­ia leads Milwaukee by two games for the final NL wild card with three games left and holds the tiebreaker.

■ Athletics 10, Mariners 3: At Seattle, Shea Langeliers hit a three-run homer and a solo shot to back James Kaprielian (5-9), who took a nohitter into the sixth and ultimately allowed one hit in six shutout innings.

■ Rockies 4, Dodgers 1: At Los Angeles, German Marquez (9-14) allowed one run on one hit in six innings to beat Spring Valley product Tyler Anderson (15-5), who struck out 10 in five innings.

■ Cubs 8, Reds 1: At Chicago, Nelson Velazquez hit a two-run triple and a two-run double to back Marcus Stroman (6-7), who pitched six shutout innings in Chicago’s seventh straight win.

■ Pirates 7, Cardinals 5: At St. Louis, Ben Gamel hit a three-run homer, helping Pittsburgh overcome a 3-0 deficit. Albert Pujols hit a tworun double and his 702nd homer.

■ White Sox 2, Padres 1: At San Diego, Lance Lynn (8-7) held San Diego to one run in seven innings. The Padres clinched a playoff berth with Milwaukee’s loss to Miami.

■ Astros 3, Rays 1: At Houston, Jeremy Pena’s three hits included a two-run homer and an RBI single, backing Luis Garcia (15-8), who allowed one run in six innings.

■ Blue Jays 6, Red Sox 3: At Toronto, Teoscar Hernandez hit a two-run homer and a solo shot for Toronto, which went 16-3 against Boston in 2022.

■ Angels 8, Rangers 3: At Anaheim, Calif., Mike Trout had his 39th homer among his three hits for Los Angeles in its seventh straight win.

■ Tigers 5, Twins 2: At Detroit, Eric Haase and Victor Reyes homered for Detroit, which benefited from three errors in the first.

■ Guardians 7, Royals 5: At Cleveland, Josh Naylor and Will Brennan each hit a three-run homer in Cleveland’s six-run second.

■ Giants 4, Diamondbac­ks 3: At San Francisco, David Villar hit a walk-off two-run single with no outs in the 10th.

■ Orioles 3, Yankees 1: At New York, Adley Rutchman hit a double and a single, walked twice and scored twice.

■ Marlins 4, Brewers 3: At Milwaukee,

Miguel Rojas hit a go-ahead RBI single in the Miami 12th.
