Padres wrap up 5th seed in NL, beat Giants

SAN DIEGO — Sean Manaea allowed only one hit in six shutout innings and the San Diego Padres wrapped up the fifth seed in the NL playoffs, beating the San Francisco Giants 6-2 on Tuesday night.

Wil Myers homered and drove in two runs for the Padres. They got the second wild-card spot with the victory and Philadelph­ia’s 10-0 loss at Houston. San Diego will travel to New York for a a best-of-three set at the fourth-seeded Mets, starting Friday night.

Manaea (8-9) stuck out six. San Francisco starter Alex Cobb (7-8) allowed a run on seven hits in five innings.

Myers hit a solo homer in the eighth, his second homer run in the past two games. Haseong Kim added a two-run double and Manny Machado and Austin Nola each had RBI singles. The Padres took command with a four-run sixth inning.

San Diego outhit San Francisco 14-4, but the Padres stranded 19 runners to the Giants’ nine.

■ Mets 4-8, Nationals 2-0: At New York, Brandon Nimmo, Francisco Lindor and Jeff Mcneill opened with three straight homers to spark for New York to sweep a doublehead­er. Nimmo also homered and drove in three runs in the first game.

■ Braves 2, Marlins 1: At Miami, William Contreras hit the go-ahead run in the fifth, and Atlanta clinched its fifth consecutiv­e NL East title. The Braves earned a first-round bye as the No. 2 seed in the NL playoffs, behind Los Angeles.

■ Mariners 7, Tigers 6: At Seattle, catcher Luis Torrens became the first position player in Seattle history to earn a pitching win by working the 10th inning in the first game of a doublehead­er. The second game did not end before press deadline.

■ Rockies 5, Dodgers 2: At Los Angeles, Randal Grichuk hit a tiebreakin­g two-run homer off Andrew Heaney (4-4) in the seventh inning. Daniel Bard pitched a scoreless ninth and earned his 34th save. Los Angeles has lost three in a row.

■ Cardinals 8, Pirates 7: At Pittsburgh,

Albert Pujols hit a two-run single in the third inning to push his career total to 2,218 RBIS. Juan Yepez gave St. Louis the win when he hit a tiebreakin­g single with one in the 10th inning.

■ Astros 10, Phillies 0: At Houston, Justin Verlander capped his magnificen­t comeback season by striking out 10 without allowing a hit in five innings, and Houston’s bullpen kept Philadelph­ia hitless until the ninth inning.

■ Brewers 3, Diamondbac­ks 0: At

Milwaukee, Eric Lauer pitched six innings of nohit ball before getting removed from the game. Jake Cousins and Peter Strzelecki worked the final three innings of the one-hit shutout.

■ Guardians 5, Royals 3: At Cleveland, Owen Miller hit a two-run homer to back Cal Quantrill, who finished the regular season unbeaten at home, improving to 14-0 in his career.

■ Reds 3, Cubs 2: At Cincinnati, Spencer

Steer doubled off Brandon Hughes in the ninth inning to score Stuart Fairchild and Cincinnati avoided its 100th loss.

■ Athletics 2, Angels 1: At Oakland, Calif., Shea Langeliers drew a bases-loaded walk in the 10th inning as A.J. Puk (4-3) pitched a scoreless 10th for the win.

■ White Sox 8, Twins 3: At Chicago, Elvis Andrus hit his third homer in four games, a three-run shot, as Chicago cruised to its second straight win.

■ Red Sox 6, Rays 0: At Boston, Xander Bogaerts hit a grand slam to back Nathan Eovaldi (6-3), who pitched five scoreless innings.
