Dem incumbents in lead in county races
Democratic incumbents in Clark County offices were leading in their races Wednesday, preliminary election returns show. Clark County still needs to count around 70,000 mail-in ballots.
In the district attorney race, Democrat Steve Wolfson, a 10year incumbent, was leading Republican Timothy Treffinger with 56 percent of the vote to Treffinger’s 44 percent. Treffinger, a criminal defense and family law attorney, worked for the Storey County district attorney’s office and the Nevada attorney general’s office before going into private practice in Las Vegas.
For county treasurer, Democrat J. “Ken” Diaz was leading Republican Mitchell T. Tracy with 51.2 percent of the votes to Tracy’s 48.8 percent.
Diaz, who was leading by about 9,800 votes Wednesday afternoon before gaining another 4,000 in the evening, said he is feeling “cautiously optimistic.”
“That 9,800-vote cushion is good, but it’s still too close to call,” Diaz said.
Tracy said he is happy and feels good about the results.
“Everything’s looking good. There’s still a lot of outstanding votes,” Tracy said.
Democratic incumbent Briana Johnson was leading Republican Helen “Ms. OS” Oseguera in the county assessor’s race with 52 percent of the vote to Oseguera’s 44.8 percent. Brandon Menesini, a nonpartisan, had 2.7 percent of the votes as of Wednesday.
Johnson has worked in the assessor’s office for 27 years and the past four years as the assessor, who sets property valuations for tax purposes.
In the race for county recorder, Democratic incumbent Debbie Conway was leading Republican John Evans, a vice president in mortgage and real estate, with 52.6 percent of the votes over Evans’
47.4 percent. Conway has been the recorder for the past 15 years.
Evans said Wednesday he is feeling “cautiously optimistic” as he waits for the mail ballots that were dropped off on Election Day to be counted.
“I hope they will go my way but I have no idea and neither does anybody else,” Evans said. The other candidates did not return requests for comment.
Those results could change as the county tabulates mail-in ballots submitted on Election Day.
