UNLV volleyball team nets top Mountain West honors

Dawn Sullivan became the first UNLV volleyball coach to be named Mountain West coach of the year twice, junior outside hitter Isabel Martin was named league player of the year, and senior setter Jhenna Gabriel was named league newcomer of the year. Also, Martin, Gabriel and junior outside hitter Gabrielle Arretche-ramos made the all-conference first team, and junior middle blocker Jordyn Freeman gained honorable mention. The Mountain West-champion Rebels (26-3, 17-1), the league tournament’s top seed, open play in the event in a semifinal against No. 4 seed Utah State (20-10, 11-7) at noon Thursday in Fort Collins, Colorado.

■ Football: Seven Michigan State players were charged in the Oct. 29 postgame melee in Michigan Stadium’s tunnel. Cornerback Khary Crump faces one count of felonious assault. The charges against the six others are misdemeano­rs. Linebacker Itayvion Brown, safety Angelo Grose, cornerback Justin White and defensive ends Brandon Wright and Zion Young each were charged with aggravated assault, and linebacker Jacoby Windmon faces one count of assault and battery.

■ Football: ESPN Events will alter the Las Vegas Bowl and New Mexico Bowl kickoff times Dec. 17 if the Raiders’ Dec. 18 game at Allegiant Stadium is moved to an earlier time than its 5:20 p.m. slot. If the Raiders’ game is moved up, the Las Vegas Bowl will move from 4:30 p.m. to 11:30 a.m., and the New Mexico Bowl will move from 11:15 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

■ Men’s basketball: At George Town, Cayman Islands, Kenan Blackshear hit a go-ahead layup with 1:25 left and three free throws in the final 10 seconds to lead UNR past Arkon 62-58. Will Baker scored 18 points for the Wolf Pack (6-1), who dealt the Zips (3-3) their second straight loss.
