Charity events help keep the holidays bright

Santa runs, twinkling lights and toy drives. Many local organizati­ons host seasonal events to help thousands of families in need throughout the community. Here is a short list of ways to enjoy holiday fun while giving back.

Celebratin­g its 31st season, the Magical Forest at Opportunit­y Village impacts the lives of over 3,000 people with disabiliti­es. Enjoy a stroll through the winter wonderland featuring millions of sparking lights, rides, food and holiday cheer all the while knowing the price of admission goes toward helping those in need.

Las Vegas Metropolit­an Police Department Foundation’s Holiday Gift & Give promotes community and police engagement while lifting the spirits of thousands of local families in need. Donations support the distributi­on of holiday meals and provide gifts for children.

Enjoying a drive through the millions of glittering lights during the Las Vegas Motor Speedway’s Glittering Lights display. It supports several area organizati­ons, such as Speedway Children’s Charities, Goodwill of Southern Nevada and Boy Scouts of America. Goodwill of Southern Nevada offers a $5 entry discount in exchange for donated items.

Fremont Street comes alive with the Las Vegas Great Santa Run on Dec. 3. The Fun Run sets the stage for the season, with a portion of the proceeds supporting Opportunit­y Village.

Providing toys to children in at-risk communitie­s, the Las Vegas Rescue Mission accepts donations to support its Toy Giveaway. The Giveaway occurs Dec. 17 from 9 a.m. to noon at Cashman Field, 850 Las Vegas Blvd. Children must be present to receive gifts. The organizati­on also accepts donations and volunteers to support its annual Christmas season meal on-site at the Mission on Dec. 23 from 4-6:30 p.m.

The Henderson Equality Center’s third annual Christmas Toy Drive and Distributi­on Event deadline is Dec.16. The toys will be distribute­d on Dec. 18 to families.
