Brazil overcomes Neymar’s injury to surge past Serbia

-

Neymar sustained a right ankle injury Thursday, but Richarlison scored in the 62nd and 73rd minutes to help Brazil beat Serbia 2-0.

Richarlison’s second goal came on an acrobatic kick just before Neymar limped off. Richarlison used one touch to get the ball in the air and then spun around and got off the ground before knocking the ball into the net with his right foot.

Brazil doctor Rodrigo Lasmar said Neymar has a right ankle sprain but he declined to speculate whether he would be able to play Monday against Switzerland.

Neymar was fouled nine times, four more than any other player at this year’s World Cup. Richarlison scored his first goal from close range. Vinicius Junior assisted on both goals.

■ Portugal 3, Ghana 2: Cristiano Ronaldo became the first male player to score at five World Cups with his 65thminute goal on a penalty kick that opened the scoring. Andre Ayew scored the equalizer eight minutes later, but Joao Felix restored Portugal’s lead in the 78th, and Rafael Leao scored to make it 3-1. Osman Bukari scored for Ghana in the 89th.

■ Uruguay 0, South Korea 0: Favored Uruguay had the best scoring chances, with Diego Godin hitting the post in the 43rd minute and Federico Valverde following suit in the 89th. South Korea’s best chance came in the 34th when Hwang Ui-jo sailed a close-range kick over the crossbar.

■ Switzerland 1, Cameroon 0: Breel Embolo scored in the 48th minute and then raised his hands in a gesture of apology as his teammates celebrated. Embolo, 25, left Cameroon with his family when he was 5 and kept his promise by not celebrating if he scored against the country of his birth.
