Pulisic day-to-day with pelvic injury

-

United States forward Christian Pulisic is listed as day to day after sustaining a pelvic injury in his team’s 1-0 World Cup win over Iran that sent the Americans to the round of 16 of the tournament Tuesday.

Pulisic scored the 38th-minute winning goal but crashed into Iranian goalkeeper Alireza Beiranvand during the play. The Chelsea striker was substituted at the start of the second half and taken to a hospital for tests.

The U.S. Soccer Federation said Pulisic was diagnosed with a pelvic contusion and returned to the team hotel. A video posted later on social media by the U.S. team showed Pulisic celebrating with the rest of the squad as they arrived at the team hotel.

The USSF did not make Pulisic available to media Wednesday but posted a video of him dribbling a ball.

■ Pele back in hospital: Brazilian icon Pele was hospitalized in Sao Paulo to regulate the medication in his fight against a colon tumor, his daughter said.

Kely Nascimento added that there was “no emergency” concerning her 82-year-old father’s health. Pele had a tumor removed in September 2021, and the hospital said at that time he would begin chemotherapy.

Pele helped Brazil win the 1958, 1962 and 1970 World Cups and remains the country’s leading scorer with 77 goals in 92 matches for the national team.

■ Neymar on mend: Brazil forward Neymar underwent ankle treatment in a swimming pool to try to recover in time to play again at the World Cup. Brazil doctors haven’t given a timetable on Neymar’s recovery, or said if he would return.

Neymar continued his physiotherapy in a pool at the team’s hotel along with left back Alex Sandro, who has an injured hip. Both players, along with right back Danilo, aren’t available for the team’s final group match Friday against Cameroon.

■ Woman official to make history: French referee Stephanie Frappart will become the first woman to take charge of a men’s World Cup match Thursday when the 38-year-old officiates Germany’s match against Costa Rica.

FIFA also picked two women as assistants to Frappart — Neuza Back of Brazil and Karen Diaz Medina of Mexico — to complete an all-female refereeing team on the field.

■ Martino out as Mexico coach: Gerardo “Tata” Martino left his role as Mexico coach after the team exited the World Cup at the group stage Wednesday.

Mexico (1-1-1) failed to advance to the knockout round for the first time since 1978. Martino, who previously coached his native Argentina, took over as Mexico coach in January 2019 after leading Atlanta United to victory in the MLS Cup.
