Toronto C Matthews, NHL MVP, out with knee injury
Toronto center Auston Matthews (knee sprain) will be sidelined at least three weeks, the team said. The 25-year-old reigning NHL MVP, who had 60 goals in 2021-22, has 25 goals and 28 assists in 47 games this season. Elected by fans for the Feb. 4 All-star Game, Matthews will be replaced by Florida center Aleksander Barkov on the Atlantic Division roster, the NHL said.
■ NBA: A jersey Lebron James wore in the first half of Game 7 of the 2013 NBA Finals sold at auction for $3.7 million Friday, becoming the third most expensive game-worn jersey sold at Sotheby’s — behind Michael Jordan’s “Last Dance” NBA Finals jersey ($10.91M) and Diego Maradona’s “Hand of God” jersey ($9.28M).
■ Mixed martial arts: Alex Pereira will defend his middleweight belt against former title holder Israel Adesanya in the UFC 287 co-main event April 8, and Jorge Masvidal will return against Gilbert Burns in the other comain event, UFC president Dana White said. A location for UFC 287 has yet to be announced.
■ Track and field: Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt said he is baffled over how $12.7 million of his money has gone missing from a Kingston-based private investment firm that authorities are investigating as part of a massive fraud. The 36-year-old also said he fired his business manager.
