Top-ranked Mcilroy grabs three-stroke lead in Dubai

Top-ranked Rory Mcilroy delivered a short-iron exhibition in a 7-under-par 65 for a 15-under 201 total to take a threeshot lead into the weather-impacted Dubai Desert Classic’s final round in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. The 33-year-old had eight birdies, and none of the birdie putts was from beyond 7 feet. Englishmen Callum Shinkwin (67) and 484th-ranked Dan Bradbury (68) were tied for second.

■ Hockey: At Dollar Loan Center, Mitch Mclain had two goals and an assist to lead Calgary past the Silver Knights 6-2 in an AHL game Saturday. The Wranglers (29-10-2) had a 36-25 edge in shots and moved to 5-0-1 in their past six games. Gage Quinney had a goal and an assist for the Silver Knights (16-26-3) in their fourth loss in five games.

■ Skiing: At Spindleruv Mlyn, Czech Republic, Mikaela Shiffrin must wait at least five more weeks before tying Ingemar Stenmark’s World Cup record of 86 wins after placing second, 0.06 seconds behind German Lena Durr, in a slalom. Shiffrin’s next chance will be in March after the Feb. 6-19 world championsh­ips in France.

■ Motor sports: At Daytona Beach, Fla., Acura dominated the hybrid engine debut in North American sports car racing with a 1-2 finish at the Rolex 24. Helio Castroneve­s and the automaker won the twice-round-the-clock endurance race for a third straight year.

■ Figure skating: At San Jose, Calif., Ilia Malinin won his first national title, landing three quadruple jumps in a 177.38 free skate for a 287.74 total to retain his 10-point edge over runner-up Jason Brown at the U.S. championsh­ips.

■ Tennis: At Fertitta Tennis Complex, Aaron Bailey and Dusan Rsovac each won a three-set singles match and teamed for a 6-4 doubles victory to lead UNLV (3-1) to a 5-2 triumph over Weber State (2-3).
