Manfred: A’s owner puts focus on Las Vegas park

-

Oakland Athletics owner John Fisher has made Las Vegas the focus of his most recent efforts to get a new ballpark, MLB commissioner Rob Manfred said Wednesday. Speaking to reporters at the Cactus League media day in Phoenix, Manfred said there have been issues with the A’s efforts in Oakland regarding their $12 billion Howard Terminal project. The A’s are down to two preferred Southern Nevada ballpark sites, the Tropicana on the south Strip and the Las Vegas Festival Grounds, owned by casino magnate Phil Ruffin on the north Strip.

■ Rangers: Two-time Cy Young Award winner Jacob degrom was held out of Texas’ first spring training workout after feeling tightness in his left side. Each of the 34-yearold four-time All-star’s past two seasons were shortened substantially by injuries. He signed a five-year, $185 million deal in December after spending his first nine major league seasons with the New York Mets.

■ Yankees: Right-hander Frankie Montas will undergo right shoulder surgery Tuesday and be sidelined for most of this season, manager Aaron Boone said. The 29-year-old, who is 36-35 with a 3.90 ERA in seven major league seasons, went 1-3 with a 6.35 ERA in eight 2022 starts after being acquired Aug. 1 from Oakland.

■ Television: The impending bankruptcy of Diamond Sports Group, the company that owns Ballys’ 19 regional sports networks, will not impact fans’ ability to watch their favorite teams play, MLB commissioner Rob Manfred said, adding that the sport would pick up streaming in a worst-case scenario.
