Spartans roll in first home game since fatal shootings

Tyson Walker shook off a slow start to score 23 points and lifted Michigan State to an 80-65 win over No. 17 Indiana on Tuesday night in the Spartans’ first home game since last week’s shootings on the East Lansing campus that killed three students and hospitaliz­ed five students.

The victims, survivors and first responders from the shootings were recognized, and there was a moment of silence that was broken by the Michigan State band playing “MSU Shadows,” while coach Tom Izzo gazed into the crowd with tears welling in his eyes.

The Spartans improved to 17-10 overall and 9-7 in the Big Ten, while Indiana fell to 19-9 and 10-7.

■ No. 14 Kansas State 75, No. 19 Baylor 65: At Manhattan, Kansas, Keyontae Johnson scored 25 points, Markquis Nowell added 14 points and 10 assists and the Wildcats (21-7, 9-6 Big 12) downed the Bears (20-8, 9-6).

■ No. 25 Texas A&M 68, No. 11 Tennessee 63: At College Station, Texas, Wade Taylor IV scored 25 points, including four free throws down the stretch, and the Aggies (21-7, 13-2 Southeaste­rn Conference) extended their winning streak to six games with a victory over the Volunteers (20-8, 9-6), who lost for the fourth time in five games.

■ No. 22 San Diego State 77,

Colorado State 58: At San Diego, Jaedon Lee paced a balanced scoring attack with 14 points as the conference-leading Aztecs (22-5, 13-2 MW) won their fifth straight game by routing the Rams (12-16, 4-11).

■ UNR 66, San Jose State 51: At

Reno, Will Baker had 18 points in 24 minutes and Darrion Williams added 14 points as the Wolf Pack (21-7, 11-4) topped the Spartans (16-12, 7-8).

■ Utah State 65, Wyoming 55: At Laramie, Wyoming, Steven Ashworth tallied 19 points, including a 10-for-12 effort at the free-throw line, as the Aggies (22-7, 11-5) downed the Cowboys (8-19, 3-12).

At Colorado Springs, Colorado, Eduardo Andre scored 26 points and Isaiah Hill added 22 as the Bulldogs (10-17, 6-10) beat the Falcons (14-15, 5-11). Women

Leafs’ O’reilly proves his net worth with early goals

Newly acquired center Ryan O’reilly scored twice on Toronto’s first two shots on net and added an empty-net goal in the Maple Leafs’ 6-3 victory over the host Buffalo Sabres.

Playing his third game in four nights since being acquired from St. Louis, O’reilly scored 37 seconds apart in the opening period.

Buffalo’s Alex Tuch scored the 100th goal of his NHL career.

■ Red Wings 3, Capitals 1: At Washington, Pius Suter scored twice, Robert Hagg ended a 75-game goal drought and Detroit won for the sixth time in seven games, moving ahead of the Capitals in the Eastern Conference wild-card race and taking another step to ending its six-year playoff drought.

■ Canadiens 5, Devils 2: At Newark, New Jersey, Sam Montembeau­lt stopped three breakaways and made 37 saves to help Montreal end the Devils’ six-game home winning streak.

■ Wild 2, Kings 1: At St. Paul, Minnesota, Ryan Hartman scored twice and Filip Gustavsson made 33 saves as the Wild won their third straight game, beating Los Angeles.
