Favorites thrive in first round

BLACKSBURG, Va. — Myah Selland scored 29 points to lead South Dakota State to a 62-57 overtime victory over Southern California on Friday in the NCAA Tournament’s first round.

Selland scored 16 consecutiv­e points spanning the fourth quarter and overtime as the ninth-seeded Jackrabbit­s (29-5) won their 22nd straight game despite shooting 35.2 percent and committing 20 turnovers. Destiny Littleton scored 18 points and Rayah Marshall 17 for the eighth-seeded Trojans (21-10).

■ No. 4 Virginia Tech 58, Chattanoog­a 33: At Blacksburg, Va., Georgia Amoore scored 22 points for the top-seeded Hokies (28-4), who didn’t trail in their 12th straight win. The 16th-seeded Moccasins (20-13) shot 28.6 percent in their lowest-scoring game this season.

Greenville 1

■ No. 1 South Carolina 72, Norfolk State 40: At Columbia, S.C., the top-seeded Gamecocks (33-0) held the 16th-seeded Spartans (26-7) to 26.2 percent shooting in their 39th straight win and moved to 11-0 in first-round NCAA Tournament games under coach Dawn Staley.

■ No. 7 Maryland 93, Holy Cross 61: At College Park, Md., the second-seeded Terrapins (26-6) led 14-0, forced 11 first-quarter turnovers and led 23-4 entering the second quarter. The 15th-seeded Crusaders (24-9) totaled 24 turnovers.

■ No. 10 Notre Dame 82, Southern Utah 56: At South Bend, Ind., Maddy Westbeld scored 20 points for the third-seeded Fighting Irish (26-5), who led 16-0 and didn’t trail. The 14th-seeded Thunderbir­ds (23-10) shot 35.7 percent and were outrebound­ed 53-25.

■ No. 25 Arizona 75, West Virginia 62: At College Park, Md., Cate Reese scored 25 points for the seventh-seeded Wildcats (22-9), who shot 72.0 percent in the first quarter and didn’t trail. The 10th-seeded Mountainee­rs (19-12) got within three points of the lead in the third quarter.

■ South Florida 67, Marquette 65, OT: At Columbia, S.C., Elena Tsineke’s jumper with 31.2 seconds left in overtime put the eighth-seeded Bulls (27-6) ahead to stay.

They trailed by as many as nine points in the second half. The ninth-seeded Golden Eagles (22-11) didn’t trail for the first 38 minutes.

■ Mississipp­i State 81, Creighton 66: At South Bend, Ind., Jerkaila Jordan scored 20 points for the 11th-seeded Bulldogs (23-10), who hit 11 of 19 3-point tries and 18 of 20 free throws. The sixth-seeded Bluejays (22-9) shot 37.3 percent.

■ No. 8 Utah 103, Gardner-webb 77: At Salt Lake City, Alissa Pili had 33 points, eight assists and eight rebounds for the second-seeded Utes (26-4), who shot 58.7 percent and halted a 21-game win streak by the 15th-seeded Bulldogs (29-5).

■ No. 9 Louisiana State 73, Hawaii 50: At Baton Rouge, La., Angel Reese had 34 points and 15 rebounds in her 29th double-double this season for the third-seeded Tigers (29-2), who raced to a double-digit first-quarter lead. The 14th-seeded Rainbow Wahine (18-15) were outscored 44-16 in the paint.

■ Princeton 64, North Carolina State 63: At Salt Lake City, Grace Stone hit her fifth 3-pointer of the night with 4.7 seconds left and totaled 22 points for the 10th-seeded Tigers (24-5), who held the seventh-seeded Wolfpack (2012) scoreless for the final 5:43. Kaitlyn Chen had 22 points for N.C. State.

■ No. 5 Stanford 92, Sacred Heart 49: At Stanford, Calif., the top-seeded Cardinal (29-5) notched the program’s 100th NCAA Tournament win despite being without top forward Cameron Brink (flu). The 16th-seeded Pioneers (19-14) were outrebound­ed 57-28.

■ No. 3 Iowa 95, Southeaste­rn Louisiana 43: At Iowa City, Iowa, Caitlin Clark had 26 points and 12 assists for the second-seeded Hawkeyes (276), who shot 60.0 percent and didn’t trail. The 15th-seeded Lady Lions (21-10) missed 29 of 32 second-half shots while shooting 25.4 overall.

■ Mississipp­i 71, No. 19 Gonzaga 48: At Stanford, Calif., Snudda Collins scored 15 points for eighth-seeded Ole Miss (24-8), which held ninth-seeded Gonzaga (28-5) to 28.8 percent shooting — including a 1-for-16 showing on 3-pointers — and a season-low point total.

■ Georgia 66, Florida State 54: At Iowa City, Iowa, Diamond Battles scored 21 points for the 10th-seeded Bulldogs (22-11), who led 43-30 with 2:03 left in the third quarter before going on a 14-0 run. The seventh-seeded Seminoles (23-10) had just eight players available because of injuries.
