Angels’ Schanuel first 2023 draft choice to make majors

-

Nolan Schanuel became the first player drafted in 2023 to make the majors when the Los Angeles Angels promoted the 21-year-old first baseman/outfielder from Double-a Rocket City. His 21 minor league games are the fewest by a player before a merit-based promotion to the majors since 2003. Drafted with the No. 11 pick out of Florida Atlantic, Schanuel has hit .370 with one homer, 15 RBIS, 21 walks, 10 strikeouts, a .510 on-base percentage and a 1.004 OPS across three levels.

■ Cardinals: Top prospect Masyn Winn was promoted from Triple-a Memphis.

The 21-year-old shortstop, a 2020 second-round draft pick who was clocked throwing 100.5 mph from his position at the All-star Futures game, has hit .288 with 18 homers, 61 RBIS, 17 steals and a minors-high 99 runs in 105 games with the Redbirds this season.

■ Blue Jays: Two-time All-star shortstop Bo Bichette (right knee tendonitis), sidelined since Aug. 1, will be activated Saturday. The 25-year-old was hitting an American League-best .321 when he went on the injured list and still leads the AL in hits with 144. He also has 17 homers, 59 RBIS and an .847 OPS.

■ Reds: Reliever Chasen Shreve signed a minor league contract. The 33-year-old left-hander, a Bonanza High and College of Southern Nevada product, was released Sunday by Detroit. He has a 3.98 ERA in 10 major league seasons with six teams.

■ Schedule: Because of the forecast related to Hurricane Hilary, both Los Angeles teams and San Diego will play split doubleheaders Saturday and then not play Sunday.

■ Giants: Manager Gabe Kapler was suspended one game and fined an undisclosed amount for returning to the dugout after his fourth-inning ejection Tuesday.
