DORIS M. STEINER
Doris May (Mcgilvary) Steiner passed away 21 July 2017 in Las Vegas at age 82. Born 6 April 1935 in Colonial Heights, Va. she played hockey for Petersburg HS, graduating in 1953. She attended Richmond Professional Institute for two years, and VPI for one year in Blacksburg, becoming one of the first women employed as a draftsman at the Virginia Highway Dept.
She married Joe Brown in 1954, and George Carter in 1959, with whom she had two sons. While on the Zoning Commission in Frederick County, Md. in 1974 she met Harold Steiner. They moved out West and wed in 1975 in Las Vegas, where they permanently settled, quickly becoming devoted Nevadans. Doris and Hal were active in local historical societies, and vigorously researched Mcgilvary family geneology and the Old Spanish Trail, authoring detailed books on both. She was also very busy with the Republican Women of Las Vegas, and both the Nevada and National Federation of Republican Women, serving as president of the first two. And she was twice a delegate to the Republican National Convention. Her & Hal loved competing in chili cook-offs, hosting and visiting family, and vacationing around the globe, by car and by cruise. Doris threw amazing parties, and Christmas was her specialty. Smart, loving, honest, and loyal, she has been missed terribly.
Doris was preceded in death by her brother Raymond Mcgilvary, husband
Hal Steiner, and son Kevin Carter. She is survived by her sons Art Carter and Larry Steiner, and granddaughters Fiona and Violet. Memorial services will be held 11am Monday 28 August at Blandford Chapel in Petersburg, Va. There will be simultaneous services and burial at Blandford Cemetery for her, her husband Colonel Harold Steiner (Ret. USAF), son Kevin Carter, and brother William Mcgilvary. The family can be contacted at champy89@gmail.com.
