Gusher of walks knocks Rangers out of first place

MINNEAPOLI­S — Jonathan Hernandez walked three batters in the 13th inning, among a season-high 10 walks by Texas pitchers, and the Rangers fell out of first place in the American League West for the first time since April 8 with a 7-6 loss to Minnesota on Sunday.

Texas wasted a 5-0 lead built with Jonah Heim’s grand slam and rookie J.P. Martinez’s solo homer. Royce Lewis started the Twins’ comeback with a sixth-inning slam.

The Rangers had held a share of first place in every day this season except when they fell one game behind the Los Angeles Angels in April. Texas (73-57) has lost nine of its past 10 games, falling behind Seattle (74-56).

Minnesota overcame a 5-4 deficit in the ninth. Aroldis Chapman walked Michael A.

Taylor with one out, and Taylor advanced on a disengagem­ent violation. Donovan Solano followed with an RBI single.

Corey Seager hit a sacrifice fly in the 12th, but Jorge Polanco hit into a run-scoring forceout in the bottom half.

With Carlos Correa on second in the 13th, Hernandez (1-2) walked Joey Gallo on four pitches, Matt Wallner on a full count and Taylor on four pitches.

■ White Sox 6, Athletics 1: At Chicago, Yoan Moncada had two doubles, two singles and two RBIS to back Mike Clevinger (6-6), who allowed one run on one hit in seven innings.

■ Phillies 3, Cardinals 0: At Philadelph­ia, Kyle Schwarber hit a leadoff homer to back Aaron Nola (12-8), who allowed one hit — a leadoff double — in seven shutout innings.

■ Rockies 4, Orioles 3: At Baltimore, Hunter Goodman had two hits and an RBI and scored the tiebreakin­g run in the Colorado ninth in his major league debut.

■ Mariners 3, Royals 2: At Seattle, Luis Castillo (11-7) allowed one hit in seven shutout innings for Seattle, which took sole possession of first place in the AL West.

■ Dodgers 7, Red Sox 4: At Boston, Mookie Betts capped his Boston return with a second straight three-hit game, including a two-run homer, for Los Angeles.

■ Cubs 10, Pirates 1: At Pittsburgh, Cody Bellinger hit two two-run doubles and an RBI single to back Javier Assad (3-2), who allowed one run in seven innings.

■ Astros 17, Tigers 4: At Detroit, Jeremy

Pena went 5-for-6 with three RBIS to back Justin Verlander (10-6), who shut out Detroit over five innings.

■ Mets 3, Angels 2: At New York, Pete Alonso hit a tying RBI double in the New York eighth and Rafael Ortega a walk-off RBI single in the ninth.

■ Nationals 2, Marlins 1: At Miami, Jorge Soler hit a two-run homer in the third, his 35th homer this season and majors-best 19th goahead shot.

■ Rays 7, Yankees 4: At St. Petersburg, Fla., Brandon Lowe hit a solo homer, an RBI double and a two-run single for Tampa Bay.

■ Guardians 10, Blue Jays 7: At Toronto, Kole Calhoun went 3-for-5 with a tiebreakin­g RBI double in Cleveland’s four-run 11th.

■ Brewers 10, Padres 6: At Milwaukee,

Sal Frelick hit a two-run double in a seven-run Milwaukee sixth that included five walks.

■ Giants 8, Braves 5: At San Francisco, Patrick Bailey hit a go-ahead three-run double in San Francisco’s four-run fifth.

■ Diamondbac­ks 5, Reds 2: At Phoenix, Christian Walker hit a go-ahead sacrifice fly in Arizona’s three-run eighth.

■ Aviators 7, Rainiers 6: At Tacoma, Wash., Yohel Pozo hit a go-ahead RBI single in the 10th for the Aviators (64-61, 30-21 second half), who halted a three-game skid. Tacoma (67-59, 30-21) held a 12-10 edge in hits.
