Doncic, Mavs down Spurs, spoil Wembanyama debut

Luka Doncic had 33 points, 14 rebounds and 10 assists as Dallas spoiled No. 1 draft pick Victor Wembanyama’s NBA debut by beating host San Antonio 126-119 on Wednesday.

Kyrie Irving scored 22 points for the Mavericks, who forced two turnovers in the final minute. Devin Vassell led the Spurs with 23 points.

Wembanyama scored nine of his 15 points in the final seven minutes after battling foul trouble. He hit 6 of 9 shots and had five rebounds, two assists, two steals and one block in 23 minutes.

Wembanyama exited after picking up his fourth foul with 8:37 left in the third quarter while attempting to set a pick on UNLV product Derrick Jones Jr.

The Mavs took their first lead 37 seconds later at 73-72 on a layup by Dereck Lively II.

Doncic was cleared to play an hour before tipoff after being listed as questionab­le with a left calf sprain, and the All-star guard played 32 minutes.

■ Pelicans 111, Grizzlies 104: At Memphis, Tenn., C.J. Mccollum had 24 points, and Zion Williamson scored 12 of his 23 in the fourth quarter for New Orleans.

■ Thunder 124, Bulls 104: At Chicago, Shai Gilgeous-alexander scored seven of his 31 points in a 12-0 third-quarter run that put Oklahoma City in control.

■ Hornets 116, Hawks 110: At Charlotte, N.C., Findlay Prep product P.J. Washington scored 25 points for Charlotte, which went ahead to stay with 4:19 left.

■ Kings 130, Jazz 114: At Salt Lake City, Harrison Barnes scored 27 of his 33 points in the first half for Sacramento. Utah had won six straight openers.

■ Clippers 123, Trail Blazers 111: At Los Angeles, Paul George scored 27 points for Los Angeles, which shot 52.2 percent while hitting 16 of 34 3-point tries.

■ Heat 103, Pistons 102: At Miami, Bam Adebayo scored 22 points for Miami, which led by 19 with 9:07 left and went scoreless for the final 2:57.

■ Magic 116, Rockets 86: At Orlando, Fla., Cole Anthony had 20 points and eight rebounds in 24 minutes off the bench for Orlando.
