Points, passing by Sears help Alabama upend No. 8 Auburn

Mark Sears hit two free throws with nine seconds left and totaled 22 points and eight assists to lead host Alabama past No. 8 Auburn 79-75 on Wednesday. The Crimson Tide (13-6, 5-1 SEC) led 44-30 at halftime in their first win over a ranked foe in five tries this season. Johnni Broome had 25 points, 14 rebounds and five blocks for the Tigers (16-3, 5-1).

■ Northweste­rn 96, No. 10 Illinois 91, OT: At Evanston, Ill., Boo Buie had 29 points and seven assists for the Wildcats (14-5,

5-3 Big Ten), who opened overtime with a 9-0 run. Coleman Hawkins had 22 points and 13 rebounds for the Illini (14-5, 5-3), who beat Northweste­rn by 30 on Jan. 2.

■ No. 14 Marquette 86, Depaul 73: At Chicago, David Joplin hit six 3-pointers and totaled 21 points for the Golden Eagles (14-5, 5-3 Big East), who shot 54.5 percent while hitting 15 of 33 3-point tries. The Blue Demons (3-16, 0-8) lost their seventh in a row.

■ No. 22 Florida Atlantic 69, Rice 56: At Houston, Nick Boyd scored 18 points for FAU (16-4, 6-1 AAC), which had edges of 43-34 in rebounds and 36-14 in points in the paint. Rice (7-12, 1-5) has lost 27 straight to ranked foes dating to 1999.

■ No. 23 Iowa State 78, Kansas State 67:

At Ames, Iowa, Milan Momcilovic scored 19 points for the Cyclones (15-4, 4-2 Big 12) in their 12th straight home win. The Wildcats (14-5, 4-2) didn’t lead over the final 4:09.

Mountain West men

■ UNR 77, No. 24 Colorado State 64: At Reno, Jarod Lucas scored 28 points for the Wolf Pack (16-4, 3-3), who halted a three-game skid and moved to 10-1 at home. The Rams (15-4, 3-3) shot 39.3 percent.

Top 10 women

■ Oklahoma 91, No. 10 Texas 87: At Austin, Texas, Skylar Vann had 19 points and 12 rebounds for the Sooners (12-6, 6-1 Big 12), who scored 18 of their 26 third-quarter points in the paint and led by 13 in the period. Freshman Madison Booker scored 15 of her 29 points in the fourth quarter, including a field goal that got the Longhorns (18-3, 5-3) within 85-84.
