Mintz scores 25 to power Syracuse over No. 7 UNC

SYRACUSE, N.Y. — Judah Mintz scored 25 points, including 16 in the second half, and JJ Starling had 13 of his 23 points in the second half as Syracuse stunned No. 7 North Carolina 86-79 on Tuesday night.

North Carolina (19-6, 11-3 Atlantic

Coast Conference) missed its first 10 shots of the second half and fell behind 52-43 but rallied and took a 65-64 lead on a layup by RJ Davis with 7:16 to go. But the Orange (16-9, 7-7), which lost 103-67 at Chapel Hill last month, were not to be denied.

Starling hit a desperatio­n 3-point bank shot to reclaim the Orange lead at 67-65 with under seven minutes to go. Mintz hit a layup, jumper and two foul shots to give the Orange a 73-67 margin, and Starling hit another 3 to give Syracuse a 76-69 lead following a Harrison Ingram jumper with under three minutes to go.

Syracuse made its foul shots down the stretch for the winning margin.

Maliq Brown had 14 points and six rebounds for Syracuse, and Chris Bell chipped in with 13.

Davis led North Carolina with 19 points. Cormac Ryan had 18, and Armando Bacot and Ingram had 14 apiece.

■ No. 4 Marquette 78, Butler 72: At Indianapol­is, Tyler Kolek had 27 points, seven rebounds and five assists as the Golden Eagles (19-5, 10-3 Big East) won their eighth straight game. The Bulldogs (16-9, 7-7) committed 14 turnovers.

■ No. 10 Iowa State 68, Cincinnati 59: At Cincinnati, Curtis Jones and Tamin Lipsey each had 15 points to lead the Cyclones (19-5, 8-3 Big 12), who turned turnovers by the Bearcats (15-9, 4-7) into 26 points.

■ No. 12 Baylor 79, No. 25 Oklahoma 62: At Waco, Texas, Jayden Nunn scored a season-high 27 points as all five starters scored in double figures for the Bears (18-6, 7-4 Big 12). Rivaldo Soares scored 17 points on 5-of-6 shooting to lead the Sooners (18-7, 6-6) before exiting the game due to injury with 4:58 left.

■ No. 14 Illinois 97, Michigan 68: At Champaign, Ill., Terrence Shannon Jr. shot 11 of 15 from the field for 31 points for the Illini (18-6, 9-4 Big Ten). The Wolverines (8-17, 3-11) have lost 12 of 14

■ No. 16 Dayton 75, Duquesne 59: At Dayton, Ohio, Daron Holmes II had 24 points and 11 rebounds for the Flyers (204, 10-2 Atlantic 10). Jimmy Clark III had 14 points and Jake Dimichele added 12 for the Dukes (14-10, 4-7).

■ No. 17 Creighton 94, Georgetown 72: At Omaha, Neb., Baylor Scheierman had 15 points, 11 rebounds and 11 assists for the first triple-double in Bluejays (17-8, 9-5) history to include assists. The Hoyas (8-16, 1-12) lost their ninth straight overall.

■ No. 19 Brigham Young 90, Central Florida 88: At Provo, Utah, Jaxson Robinson scored 21 points off the bench as the Cougars (18-6, 6-5 Big 12) won for the fourth time in five games. The Knights (13-10, 4-7) trailed the entire way despite scoring 27 points off 17 BYU turnovers and shooting 51 percent from the field.

■ No. 20 Wisconsin 62, Ohio State 54: At Madison, Wis., Steven Crowl had 16 points and 10 rebounds for the Badgers (17-8, 9-5 Big Ten), who snapped a fourgame skid. The Buckeyes (14-11, 4-10) were outrebound­ed 39-29.

■ Pittsburgh 74, No. 21 Virginia 63: At Charlottes­ville, Va., Blake Hinson scored 27 points for the Panthers (16-8, 7-6 Atlantic Coast Conference), who ended the Cavaliers’ (19-6, 10-4) nation’s-best 23-game home winning streak.

■ No. 22 Kentucky 75, Mississipp­i 63: At Lexington, Ky., Ugonna Onyenso blocked a Rupp Arena-record 10 shots, and Antonio Reeves scored 15 points for the Wildcats (17-7, 7-4 Southeaste­rn Conference), who snapped a three-game home skid. The Rebels (18-6, 5-6) have lost five of eight.

■ Illinois State 80, No. 23 Indiana State 67: At Terre Haute, Ind., Johnny Kinziger scored a career-high 31 points for the Redbirds (12-14, 6-9 Missouri Valley Conference), who stopped a three-game skid. Julian Larry scored 20 points for Indiana State (24-3, 13-2).
