Baseball team strands 13 runners, falls to Lobos for fifth straight loss

Reed Spenrath went 2-for-4 with a three-run homer to help New Mexico edge UNLV 6-5, capping a three-game Mountain West baseball series sweep in Albuquerqu­e, New Mexico. The Lobos (10-6, 3-0) went ahead to stay in the eighth inning, when Khalil Walker hit a leadoff double and scored on Jake Holland’s sacrifice fly. Walker finished 2-for-3 and scored twice. J.P. Hefft went 3-for-4 with a double and a two-run single for the Rebels (9-6, 2-4), who had a 15-8 edge in hits and stranded 13 runners in their fifth straight loss.

■ Softball: At Norfolk, Va., the Rebels (15-8) boosted their win streak to six straight games by beating Youngstown State 3-2 and Quinnipiac 10-0. Jesse Farrell hit a go-ahead two-run homer in the sixth inning against the Penguins (10-8), who had a 7-3 edge in hits. Ariana Martinez hit a grand slam to open the scoring in a nine-run fifth against the Bobcats (5-3), who were shut out on one hit and no walks over five innings by Alanna Thiede (9-1).

■ Diving: The Rebels have five athletes competing at the NCAA Zone E championsh­ips Monday through Wednesday in Flagstaff, Arizona. Vika Yanovska, Dima Tereshchen­ko and Alex Vazquez are in the 1-meter, 3-meter and platform events. Chelsey Dorosh is in 1-meter and platform, and Jamie Spilchak is in platform. The top five females and top four males in each event earn NCAA championsh­ip berths.

■ Women’s basketball: Three Lady Rebels — Linda Frohlich (1998-2002), Constance Jinks (1999-2003) and Desi-rae Young (2020-present) — were selected to the 25-member Mountain West 25th-season team.
