Harper hits 3 homers, leads Phillies to win

PHILADELPH­IA — Bryce Harper homered for his first three hits of the season, including a grand slam, and the Philadelph­ia Phillies beat the Cincinnati Reds 9-4. Brandon Marsh also connected for Philadelph­ia, which bounced back nicely after dropping the series opener on Monday.

Spencer Turnbull struck out seven in five effective innings.

Harper went 0 for 11 with a walk while playing in three of the Phillies’ first four games, but he broke out in a big way against the Reds. The two-time NL MVP hit a solo shot in the first and fourth innings against Graham Ashcraft. He capped Philadelph­ia’s five-run seventh against Brent Suter with his seventh career grand slam.

It was Harper’s second career three-homer game and his 26th multihomer game overall. He finished with a career-best six RBIS.

■ Rays 5, Rangers 2: At St. Petersburg, Fla., Isaac Paredes hit a three-run homer in a fourrun fifth for Tampa Bay, which has a home run and stolen base in each of its first six games, matching Cleveland in 1998 as the only teams since 1901 to accomplish the feat.

■ Brewers 3, Twins 2: At Milwaukee, Jackson Chourio singled in a run in his first American Family Field plate appearance, Christian Yelich homered for Milwaukee, which opens a season with four straight wins for the first time since 2006.

■ Guardians 5, Mariners 2: At Seattle, Shane Bieber (2-0) pitched six scoreless innings for the second straight start. Bo Naylor hit a two-run homer in the fifth off Luis Castillo (0-2).

■ Cardinals 5, Padres 2: At San Diego, Willson Contreras hit a two-run homer in the sixth inning to back Miles Mikolas (1-1), who allowed two runs and seven hits in six innings.

■ Angels 3, Marlins 1: At Miami, Tyler Anderson (1-0) pitched seven scoreless innings, Aaron Hicks homered sending Miami (0-6) to its worst start in franchise history.

■ Royals 4, Orioles 1: At Baltimore, Maikel Garcia drove in three runs to back Alex Marsh (1-0), who struck out five, walked one and retired the side in order five times.

■ Cubs 12, Rockies 2: At Chicago, Cody Bellinger, Seiya Suzuki, Christophe­r Morel and Garrett Cooper homered for Chicago, which won it third straight.

■ Diamondbac­ks 7, Yankees 0: At Phoenix, Christian Walker hit a three-run homer and Zac Gallen threw six scoreless innings to end New York’s streak at five.

■ Red Sox 5, Athletics 4: At Oaklnd, Calif., Trevor Story had a pair of doubles as part of a three-hit, two-rbi night in Boston’s extra-innings victory.

■ White Sox 3, Braves 2: At Chicago, pinchhitte­r Paul Dejong had a tiebreakin­g homer for Chicago, which got its first win of the season.

■ Dodgers 5, Giants 4: At Los Angeles, Mookie Betts hit his fifth homer of the season to back Evan Phillips, who earned a four out save.

■ Blue Jays 2, Astros 1: At Houston, Davis Schneider hit a two-run homer off closer Josh Hader with two outs in the ninth inning.

■ Space Cowboys 12, Aviators 11: At Sugar Land, Texas, the Aviators fell short of a comeback, falling to the Sugar Land Space Cowboys Tuesday night. After being down 5-0, the Aviators made the ninth inning tight with a Carlos Pérez two-run homer bringing them within a run. Sugar Land reliever Bryan King earned the save on a ground out from Drew Lugbauer with runners on the corners to end the game. Zach Johnson (0-1) was tabbed the loss for the Aviators.
