While serving as mayor since 2011, I have had the good fortune to see Las Vegas grow and evolve into a world class city. One of the greatest achievements both former Mayor Oscar Goodman and I envisioned was the establishment of quality medical care in our urban core. That goal has been realized through the creation of the transformative Las Vegas Medical District. With the support of the Las Vegas City Council, the idea to establish a center of academic medicine in the center of the valley, the Las Vegas Medical District is, today, a reality — a growing and thriving destination for health, wellness and research.
While fluctuating market conditions over the years created some challenges, recent significant investment in the area, catalyzed by the Kirk Kerkorian School of Medicine at UNLV, is propelling the Medical District to new heights. Most importantly, the District is now serving more residents than ever thanks to expanding hospitals, new ancillary medical and dental providers, and a growing School of Medicine.
Thanks to public investment in signage, infrastructure, landscaping and public art, the Las Vegas Medical District is also taking on a new and distinctive look.
Colorful murals, sculptures, trees and plants, nighttime lighting, expanded sidewalks and sitting areas that provide respite for medical students, staff, patients and families, are becoming commonplace throughout the District, while helping to build a strong sense of identity as our valley’s center of medicine.
The Las Vegas Medical District is the result of true collaboration. Over decades, City of Las Vegas staff and elected leaders have worked hard to facilitate new development, attract investment, and secure funding for area improvements.
And thanks to District partners, including but not limited to University Medical Center, Valley Hospital, the Kirk Kerkorian School of Medicine at UNLV, and countless other health care providers, the District continues to uplift the quality of health care and access to medicine in Southern Nevada — a benefit that cannot be overstated.
