Bioscience makes headlines in the Las Vegas Medical District
Thanks to more than $500 million in actual and planned private and public investment since 2018, the Las Vegas Medical District (LVMD) continues its impressive growth and evolution as our city’s once emerging and now established center of medicine.
Leading the list of new and exciting development in the LVMD is the planned creation of a Bioscience Incubator Lab and the formation of a Bio Health Sciences steering committee to help shape and guide its progress.
The Bioscience Incubator will be Southern Nevada’s first and only bioscience incubator to support and grow bio health sciences, biotech and digital health startup companies. It will eventually include private wet labs and office spaces, shared scientific equipment and co-working and conference facilities. The idea behind a bioscience incubator is to create a space of collaboration amongst peers in the biotech industry, support entrepreneurial and start-up programs and provide access to funding resources — all with the ultimate goal of more quickly advancing discoveries, treatments and medicines to improve health care.
A true multiplier, a bioscience incubator also will attract businesses and physician groups to fill gaps that may be missing in Southern Nevada health care.
Other recent developments
Other recent developments at the LVMD include: an increase in class size at the Kirk Kerkorian School of Medicine at UNLV thanks to the 2022 opening of its first medical education building; UMC’S REVITALIZE project that is rehabbing nine buildings on the UMC campus; the August 2023 opening of Lumina — Solera Living Center, a 54-bed memory care facility; future apartment development of more than 500 rental units; a $60 million-plus investment by G2 Capital Development for a 150,000-squarefoot medical building; and ongoing public infrastructure enhancements throughout the LVMD in excess of $130 million.
Of special note is an infusion of planned public art throughout the LVMD to celebrate the area’s thriving medical and health care community and create a strong sense of place. A number of outdoor murals and sculptures by noted Las Vegas artists will soon adorn walls along the district’s walkways and appear at key locations, adding color and vibrancy to the area. The first mural on Wellness Way was completed in December 2023.
Located within an Opportunity Zone and within the city’s Redevelopment Area, the LVMD offers developers many tax and financial incentives.
