Vogel fired as Suns coach after ouster in first round
Phoenix fired Frank Vogel as coach after one season. The Suns went 49-33, gained the West’s sixth playoff seed and were swept by Minnesota in the first round. Vogel, 50, who guided the Los Angeles Lakers to an NBA title in 2020, is 480-422 in 12 seasons leading three teams. Phoenix is seeking its third coach in as many seasons, with former Milwaukee coach Mike Budenholzer reportedly a leading candidate.
■ Hornets: Charles Lee was hired as coach, receiving a four-year deal with undisclosed terms. The 39-year-old Bucknell product is in his first season as Boston’s top assistant after five years as a Milwaukee assistant and four as an Atlanta assistant. His teams have a .637 winning percentage and nine playoff berths in 10 years.
■ Bucks: The league suspended guard Patrick Beverley for four games without pay to begin next season for his actions during and after Milwaukee’s seasonending loss at Indiana on May 2, when the 35-year-old threw a ball at spectators and had what was termed an “inappropriate” interaction with a reporter.
■ Jurisprudence: Former forward Glen “Big Baby” Davis was sentenced to 40 months in federal prison for participating in a scheme New York prosecutors said defrauded an insurance plan for players and their families of more than $5 million. The 38-year-old played for three NBA teams from 2007 to ’15.
■ Knicks: Forward OG Anunoby (left hamstring strain) was ruled out for
Friday’s game at Indiana. The 26-year-old scored a playoff career-high 28 points Wednesday. New York, which acquired Anunoby from Toronto in December, is 26-5 with him in the lineup.
■ Timberwolves: Forward/center Karlanthony Towns received the league’s social justice award for his work toward expanding voter rights to include formerly incarcerated individuals, among other causes.
