Central plays for Alabama Class 7A championship
On a frigid Wednesday night in Jordan-Hare Stadium, the Central Red Devils were trying to warm the hearts of their fans and bring home to Phenix City the football program’s first state championship in a quarter century.
Their game against the Thompson Warriors of Alabaster wasn’t finished before press time. The game story, photos and video are at ledger-enquirer.com.
The Red Devils came into the championship game undefeated at 13-0 and ranked No. 1 in Alabama Class 7A. Thompson was 11-1 and ranked No. 2. The Red Devils had outscored their opponents by an average of 41-8. The Warriors’ average margin was 37-18.
Central won the 1993 Class 6A state championship with a 12-7 victory over West End. Thompson won 1982 Class 3A state championship with a 14-11 victory over Oxford.
The only other time the Red Devils finished their football season undefeated and untied was in 1944, when Alabama didn’t have a state playoff.
This was the first time Central and Thompson played in football.
