Hoodies Under Jackets? Why?
Celebrities are doubling up on toppers in comfy, cozy fashion. We tell you why this, why now
“The evolution of athleisurewear has made wearing hoodies under jackets a mainstay for model and celebrity offduty looks,” says stylist Danielle Tavia, who has dressed Kat Graham in this #Stylestar combo. Why not just wear one or the other? “The two together is comfortable and adds edge without coming across as trying too hard,” Tavia says. And what the duo is worn with can change up the vibe, she adds. “Donning a pink hoodie with a peacoat and ankle booties like Diane adds a shot of girlie to the sporty look. And wearing a black hoodie with ripped jeans and high-tops like Heidi gives off rocker attitude.” Tavia’s tip to keeping the layered look from adding optical bulk to the body? “Pairing the toppers with fitted bottoms creates a more streamlined silhouette.”
The Psychologist Says
“The hood was originally added to sweaters to protect the wearer from outside elements, but even with the hood worn off, a hoodie serves as a psychological form of selfprotection,” says Dawnn Karen, founder of the Fashion Psychology Institute. “Just knowing the hood is there adds a sense of security—and a coat amplifies that secure feeling.” She adds that the type of jacket speaks volumes. “A light jacket like Gigi’s says ‘I’m cautious,’ while a heavy coat like Karlie’s says ‘I’m covering all my bases.’”
The Designer Says
“Athleisure has made comfortable, practical clothing stylish, and as designers we know the look hinges on layering,” says hoodie designer Bree Chambers, founder of athleisurewear brand Nesh NYC. She adds that hoods lend a cool hit of texture (especially with elements like the inner lining on Karlie’s hoodie or the holes on Gigi’s), while extra-long cuffs that peek out from coat sleeves look effortless.
